Official College World Series (UNC-OSU Game Thread)

I added several more gray hairs to the many I already had, but a great win nonetheless.

• With Saturday's win, Carolina is now 18-21 all-time in the CWS and 16-13 since 2006. Head coach Mike Fox has either played or coached in all 18 wins.

• Carolina is now 6-0 in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2008. Saturday's win was also UNC's first in the opening game of the CWS since the 2008 team beat LSU 8-4.

• With his first-inning HBP, Michael Busch extended his reached-base streak to a career-best 34 games.

• Busch reached base twice on Saturday. Through six NCAA tournament games, Busch has reached safely 20 times (10 hits, seven walks, three HBPs) and has a slash line of .476/.645/.810.

• Freshman LHP Caden O'Brien made his 29th appearance of the season, establishing a new school record for appearances by a true freshman. RHP Spencer Trayner (2014) held the previous mark of 28 games.

• With his second-inning single, Zack Gahagan extended his hitting streak to a season-high eight games. He is 10 for 22 through six games in the NCAA tournament.

• Freshman Ben Casparius returned to the lineup for the first time since May 11 and drove in the Tar Heels' first run of the game with an RBI groundout in the second inning.

• With three hits Saturday, Ike Freeman has now recorded five straight multi-hit games in the postseason. Through six NCAA tournament games, Freeman is hitting a team-best .500 (13 for 26).

• Senior RHP Brett Daniels made his team-high 38th appearance of the season Saturday, moving him into a tie for seventh all-time at UNC for a single season. With 93 career appearances, Daniels is one game shy of the UNC career top 10 for pitchers.

• At four hours, 24 minutes, Saturday's game was the longest nine-inning game in College World Series history. It was the longest CWS game for the Tar Heels since 2006, when Carolina beat Cal State Fullerton 7-5 in 13 innings in its opening-round game. That game took four hours, 53 minutes.

Good Win today... Was at work for a lot of it but see besides the 1st inning we took advantage of our opportunities and beaks to score... Hate to see Luca possibly reinjure his arm... Going to need big effort out of Game 2 starter(Bergner??) to get a W and get us some time off to help the relievers

That's a huge win because in the post-season so far Oregon St had looked best in the country. Every player knows that, which means all these guys know that if they avoid bad breaks, they can be CWS champs.

Thought that game would never be over. The 3rd inning seemed like it lasted an hour. I knew we had to be approaching a record for a 9 inning game.
