CHAPEL HILL --- Virginia pounded out 16 hits and completed a three-game sweep with an 8-2 win over North Carolina Saturday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. Matt Thaiss had three hits and drove in three runs to lead the Cavaliers, who clinched the No. 7 seed in next week's ACC tournament.Tyler Ramirez hit his ninth home run of the year for Carolina, which suffered a second straight series sweep for the first time since 2001.

Virginia (33-19, 15-15 ACC) scored single runs in the first and fourth against Benton Moss before Ramirez tied it in the fifth. With Carolina (32-22, 13-16 ACC) trailing 2-0, the sophomore right fielder hit a towering fly to right off David Rosenberger (2-0) that stayed just inside the foul pole.

But the Cavaliers immediately responded with a five-run sixth in which they sent 10 men to the plate against five Tar Heel pitchers. Trevor Kelley, who worked out of a bases-loaded, nobody out jam in the fourth, left with two on and one out in the sixth. Trent Thornton gave up consecutive RBI singles to Daniel Pinero and Matt Thaiss before Kenny Towns' sac fly made it 5-2.

Kelley (5-3) and Moss were honored prior to the game as the team's lone seniors. Moss allowed two runs on seven hits in three innings but stayed 7-0 on the year after Ramirez's homer got him off the hook. He also tied Patrick Johnson for third in school history with his 311th career strikeout. Kelley pitched in his NCAA-leading 39th game of the year and allowed two runs in 2.1 innings of work.

Kevin Doherty went three perfect innings for his third save as the Tar Heels were limited to just one hit in the final four frames. Adam Pate had a pair of singles for UNC.

Carolina will open the 2015 ACC Championship at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Tuesday, May 19. The time and opponent of that play-in game are yet to be determined. Check back to GoHeels.com for updates.

This team just doesn't have it,they'll be lucky to win one game in Acc Championship or NCAA.

I thought the light had finally come on for this team with its play down the stretch. Instead, they got swept in their last two conference series. That's a confidence killer.

Seemed like we never found our footing after the injuries to Reilly Hovis and Wood Myers. And our bullpen, which was supposed to be a strength, has been really disappointing. We're going to need some magic to make any noise in either tournament.
