"Brown said Chizik has developed a close relationship with new UNC defensive analyst Ted Monachino, a longtime NFL assistant coach and former coordinator. “He’s brilliant,” Brown said, comparing Monachino’s acumen on defense to that of Christiansen’s extensive offensive mind."

Hire smart analysts with a lot of experience, which means they can feed the necessary info to the less bright on the field assistant coaches. If those coaches - say, the now gone Bly and still standing Cross - are able to take good insights that have been provided to them and then translate it to the players in on the field practice, we might see improvements that matter.

And on the D side, even Thigpen needs that kind of major help. At his best he has been a great recruiter and a so-so position coach.
