#2 RPI, #1 SOS

I was hoping Michigan would continue their winning streak, but they got blown out at Nebraska last night.

I don't really get why you hate on metrics but reference the worst advanced team metric available. RPI is terrible for prediction and mediocre for retrodiction.
Alright, enough of this crap from you.
1. I don't "hate on" metrics. I just have sense enough (as well as the basketball and mathematical background) to understand what actually means anything.
2. I'm not holding up RPI as anything other than it is --- something the NCAA utilizes come tourney time.
And last but not least,
3. I posted this thread for a FYI, but also as a little shot at those obsessed with their all-knowing "metrics". Apparently that flew right past ya, Einstein.

I just like watching basketball. I don’t really need to over analyze stats and whatnot. We’ll either win the championship or we won’t. I don’t really care what some statistical formula tells me about our chances. I don’t really care what so and so’s usage rate is and I don’t put all that much stock in projecting how player X will shoot 3s in the future based on his middle school layup success rate. I just like watching basketball and I’m capable of making my own conclusions without having some numbers tell me what to think.

Basketball's a great game, ain't it?

Why do you get so defensive? He just said it's not a very meaningful metric and then you have to turn around and be a jerk about it lol

Nice try. He, and now you, are the ones being jerks. And in your (thankfully) short time here, that seems to be par for the course.

Oh, and again, RPI is well-known to be flawed (duh), but fact is it affects seeding in March, so that in and of itself makes it more "meaningful" than most anything in that massive belch of spurious numbers being thrown around in other threads.

I'm being a jerk because I called you out for it? Lol ok man. You start off by saying "Alright, enough of this crap from you". You then make your point and then have to add a snarky comment in saying, "Apparently that flew right past ya, Einstein". But that's not being a jerk?

Giving back what I get, bubba. And let's get real, you've been on here under this handle for like 2 weeks and pretty much all you've done is be a jerk or stir sh**.
I smell troll.

How have I been a jerk lol? You're just getting defensive since i'm one of the few who is calling you out for acting above everyone else on here.

If you'd have asked me preseason if I'd take 15-4 at this point, having lost to MSU, Wofford, FSU and UVA on the road, I'd have said hell yes! Of course, I'm the guy that said we may lose 9-10 games this year too. I love where we're sitting right now, Wofford being the only unexpected loss. We're only going to get better. Enjoy the ride.

I'm interested in hearing where you guys thought we'd be at this point in the season.

RPI might be terrible, but it's a metric used by the selection committee, thus making it important. Why do we need to start another pissing match over nothing?

I like to see all the various metrics. I give more credence to some than others but it's interesting to compare them nonetheless. There's no doubt that we've played a very tough schedule and we haven't even played the d00kies yet. Going to be one hell of a year.

I posted this once but I'll post it again for you statistically minded fans. This site is my favorite for team stats. I like the way they separate conference games from total games. One example of how well we've shared the ball in our 6 conference games:

Theo 26 assists
Kenny 18 assists
Cam 16 assists
Joel 15 assists
Luke 14 assists

So while we don't have anybody with a ton of assists, we have several players who can drop a dime. That makes us harder to guard, as well as leaving Joel free to be more of a scorer, which we need.

We are going to lose 9 or 10 games this year. I doubt you would have accepted a loss to Wofford.

I am hoping for a good path and our better side shows up in the tourney so we can make some noise. We got flaws we definitely have to hide.

It's not a matter of not accepting the loss to Wofford, we have no choice. And yes, it was a game I thought we'd win. HST, they are 14-5 and 4-1 in their conference. Two of their wins are against ACC teams and they continue to lead the nation in 3P%. So they're not chopped liver.

Undoubtedly. But we have a first rate coach and a great group of young men who trust him explicitly. We will continue to grow over the next two months. Right now, I'm very content with where we're sitting.

I figured 6-8 conf losses despite the optimism in here. Wofford was only loss i didnt expect. So no surprises for me. I dont see us making elite 8 in tourney unless we get some breaks with the bracket.

Or one of the big freshmen steps his game up another couple of notches. I see promising signs from Sterling. But I basically agree.

This is a rude response. Attack the argument, not the person.

Also, in no way is your post a "shot" at people who like to use metrics. Kenpom has us at #3 in SOS, and I doubt there is a stats person in the world who would deny we've had a great schedule.

This this 100% spot on it happens all the time but he don't get it, every person that doesn't agree with him is a troll and a lesser fan.

And heaven forbid you question a players action or a coaching decision you are a closet Dookie!

On the subject at hand we are not #2 or #1 in anything nationally, and that is from watching with my eyes!

All jokes aside the #2 team in the country dont lose to Wofford at home and I don't care how many computers you use to tell who is the best!

I'll disagree here. The best team in the country by a mile I believe lost at home to Santa Clara in 2009. Shit happens.

Edit: I am an idiot. It was 2005 and away versus Santa Clara. Oops...

or.....the fearsome Moo!

(rhymes with Boo for the pukies)

BTW: The, every time someone doesn't agree with you they must be.....(fill in the blank) is the classic defense of trolls every where! I can prove it because G-7 and I argued back and forth for an entire off-season about JB's defense and he never called me a troll. (yes I recognize JB can do no wrong to G-7) IMO, JB got better while our bigs learned to hedge properly; to him it was all about the bigs. We never agreed and don't need to!

I know some of them are trolls and they are pathetic by definition, but the rest....I don't understand. (the troll defenders I mean)

Attack the argument not the person is awesome advice for all of us! I would add, "if you really hate a post/poster, ignore it/them!"

Basketball is a beautiful game and I don't need statistics to drive my enjoyment or to inform me. I know what I see and this is what drives my expectations. The committee should refrain from using RPI since it is seriously flawed, but until they do, it has to be considered. I love stats like PPP, assists given if they should have been finished, and Blown assists mostly due to DES originating their use and I believe in the traditional shooting % and the like, but advanced metrics take away from my enjoyment much like statistics homework used to do in college! To each his own! Looking at Trae Young play and reading his stats tell a completely different story! I would love his stats on my team, but I would hate the effect he would have as our floor general!

Yep, although that advice would be better directed at those who actually initiate. There's a difference between attack and counter-attack.
Come on now! You give it some with no attack present Gary. Yes, you do get poked, but dont stoop to that level. Takes 2 to have an argument, dont be such a willing partner.

Perhaps a little clean-up on aisle-3 would be in order before addressing the one that got spilled on. If not? Then it's not particularly useful to even bring it up. And with that, let's put this to rest.

Given the context of the original comment, I'm assuming this comment is referencing me (among others). If I'm wrong, then disregard.

So, with that assumption in mind, can you point to a single example of me attacking the person instead of the argument? For assistance, my post history and all of my posts referencing "Gary" are below.

You fired first. Nothing in pln's comment is attacking you at all.

I'll put it to rest when you realize you have some blame here too.

Mike that would cause him to have to say he is wrong and that's never going to happen.

This is the same guy that called the rivals time stamps wrong when he was called out on posting what someone else had already posted!
