Hey Carolina Football Fans,

For the past several years THI has run an ACC Football Survivor Pool – a contest that has been a lot of fun (although quite frustrating at times) for many THI subscribers. The short version of the rules: each week you pick one ACC team to win its game: and if they win, you advance to the next week. If they lose, you’re out of the competition. If you advance, once you’ve selected a team, you cannot select that team again during the rest of the year. Of course there are some other rules (for tie-breaking purposes, etc.), and the “official” rules are posted below.

Adam Powell started this contest, and when he left, Andrew has allowed for its continuance. I have assumed the role as monitor and supervisor. Last year we had 96 contestants, and at the end of the year, AJ awarded the following contest prizes:

1st Place: botate Winner of a 12 month subscription to THI.
2nd Place: gteeitup Winner of a 6 month subscription to THI.
3rd Place: kcs46919 Winner of a 3 month subscription to THI.

. . . pretty nice prizes for only a few minutes of work/analysis each week. Prizes will be the same for this year’s contest.

The rules for 2016 are quite similar to last year’s contest. The only significant changes are in the tie-breaking section and in the addition of a “Pick-Two Week.” Check out this year’s rules below.

I assure you that I will do my best in monitoring and supervising the 2016 Survivor Pool. Here’s hoping that we will have a record number of competitors in this year’s contest.

If you have any questions or comments, please post them below.

2016 Survivor Pool Rules

--- All THI subscribers are eligible to compete in the Survivor Pool. Only one entry per screen name is allowed.

--- Select one ACC team each week that you think will win that week’s game. If your team wins, you advance to the next week. If your team loses, you are eliminated from the competition. [Notre Dame is not yet officially a member of the ACC in football, so do not select Notre Dame as a winning pick.]

--- Once you’ve selected a team, you cannot select that team again during the rest of the season. In other words, you must select a different team every single week of the competition. This requires you to select carefully, assessing things like future week’s schedules, bye weeks, matchups, “Pick-Two Week”, etc.

--- There are no bye weeks for contestants, but there are for ACC teams. This is where the future schedule assessing comes into play: if you get into a situation where every team you have not selected is on a bye week, you won’t be able to select a team, and unfortunately you’ll be eliminated.

--- Competition continues until we have our prize winners: 1st place, 2nd place and 3rd place. For bragging rights, we will also award “recognition” to individuals who finish in 4th through 10th places. If competitors are all eliminated after a week’s competition, a tiebreaker will be required.

--- “Pick-Two Week”: Since there are 13 weeks in the regular football season, and there are 14 ACC teams, we will identify one week as “Pick-Two Week.” During this week, each remaining contestant must select two teams to win that week. (For a week to be considered as a Pick-Two Week, all ACC teams must be scheduled to play, and they all must be scheduled to play one another: there are to be no non-conference games from which to choose.) For the 2016 season, there were only two weeks that qualified: Week #10 (November 5th games) and Week #11 (November 10th-12th games). With the help of Ravon, the 2016 “Pick-Two Week” was selected by lot, and it will be Week #10 - games that will be played on November 5th. To progress to the next week’s competition, both of the contestant’s selections for that week must win. If necessary for tie-breaking purposes: of those contestants who drop out, contestants who selected one winner will be considered to have finished higher in the competition than those who selected two losers. (It will not matter which team wins or loses first timewise. If one winner was selected, contestants will be grouped as having one winner that week.)

--- Tie-breaking Rules: Prior to the ACC Championship Game, survivors still in the running for 1st through 10th places will provide tie-breaking predictions based upon the ACC Championship Game. Tie-breaking predictions will be conveyed to me via e-mail, so they will remain secret until all predictions have been made. If there are many contestants that are tied, it might be necessary to add additional tiebreakers.

If tie-breaking is necessary, tie-breakers will applied one at a time. All ties broken by the 1st tie-breaker will be final. If the 1st tie-breaker fails to break all ties, the 2nd tie-breaker will be applied to any contestants still tied. If the 2nd tie-breaker fails to break all ties, the 3rd tie-breaker will be applied to any contestants still tied, etc. The tie-breakers are as follows:

1) The closest prediction of the total number of points scored in the championship game.
2) The closest prediction of the number of points scored by the winning team in the championship game.
3) The closest prediction of the total number of points scored by place kickers via field goals & extra points in the championship game.
4) The closest prediction to the distance (in yards) of the longest made field goal in the championship game.

It will not matter whether the predictions are over or under the actual number – just whichever prediction is the closest.

--- Every week of the competition, a thread for selections will be started no later than Sunday. The thread will be clearly labeled as the “Survivor Pool: Week Number X” thread to post your selections, and will contain a listing of the previous week’s results, a listing of each survivor’s teams selected or teams remaining to be selected (depending upon which list would be shortest) and a listing of the upcoming games (and starting times) for the current week.

a) All selections must post successfully to the correct week’s thread to be accepted. We cannot be responsible for any selections that fail to post correctly or are posted to the wrong thread. [If an entry is posted incorrectly, or an entry is an invalid one (team previously selected or a team not playing), no warnings will be given.]
b) Deadline for entries: [To provide consistency for each week’s competition.]
- For all Saturday games, the deadline will be Saturday at 11:30 a.m. (*)
- For games played on Thursday, Friday or Monday (Labor Day only), the deadline for entries will be at 6:00 p.m. on the day of the game. (*)
- For the Georgia Tech-Boston College game on September 3rd, that starts at 7:30 a.m., the deadline will be Friday, September 2nd at 6:00 p.m. (*)
- For the UNC-NC State game on November 25th, the deadline will be Friday, November 25th at 11:30 a.m. (*)

--- Selections that have been posted during a week may be changed before the deadline, but the change must be entered as a new posting. Changes made to previous postings will not be recognized.

My personal commitment to each contestant: I promise to have the weekly thread pinned by Sunday of each week (with AJ’s assistance). Since I do attend Carolina football games (including a few away games), the previous week’s results and selections made or to be made may not be available when the thread is first set up, but I will add them as soon as I am able.

(*) 11:30 a.m. appears to be the earliest starting time for any games that will be played on Saturday, except the Georgia Tech-Boston College game on September 3rd. All Thursday, Friday or Monday games should start no earlier than 6:00 p.m., except the UNC-NC State game on November 25th..
