Howdy again folks,
Hope you all have a great National Signing Day. Looks like your Heels are going to have a heck of a class following a season that was more exciting than they ever had when I was helping in these parts.
I'm dropping by to let you know that 2017 defensive end/outside linebacker Demarco Artis decommitted from Kentucky on Tuesday night. I know all eyes are on 2016, but very quickly all eyes will shift to 2017.
Artis' decommitment from Kentucky is very significant for UNC. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound pass rusher from Sanford (Fla.) Seminole was offered by North Carolina prior to his commitment to Kentucky. He actually has family in the Tar Heel State and I've heard from people close to UNC that the family would like to see him end up in Chapel Hill.
The kicker: The only reason Artis committed to Kentucky in the first place (with UNC very likely as the runner up at the time) was then-Kentucky assistant coach Chad Scott had been far more persistent in recruiting him for a far longer time than any other coach.
With Scott leaving Lexington for Chapel Hill yet again it sure looks like Artis could very well end up a Tar Heel. I don't have the sources I once did covering UNC, but I have confirmed that UNC would take Artis and it wouldn't shock me if it happens relatively early in the process.
He's a bit of a tweener -- not quite as long or as big as would be ideal for a defensive end, and maybe more of a down lineman/pass rusher than a standup linebacker who will cover in space. But in spite of that both the coaches at North Carolina and Kentucky really like him and I'm sure of that. UK doesn't take players who haven't visited except in very rare cases and they took him. Between Chad Scott and Charlton Warren this should eventually be a solid pickup for UNC unless he really blows up and it becomes more complicated.
I helped Artis get set up to attend one of the Rivals Camps down in Florida so there will probably be a much more in-depth eval of him by the network's analysts this spring.
