2018 recruiting

E.J. Montgomery and David McCormack seem to be the only bigs on our 2018 247board.

Out of all those guys Bol is the guy I want. So raw but still skilled and really long. Shot blocking face up spread the interior 4 man.

This Zion Williamson reminds me a bit of Kevin Madden, 2018 is considered a weak year.

I like this kid a ton and looks like we will be a factor in where he ends up, fingers crossed. Personally, may have the minority opinion but I have always liked Kevin and what he brought us. Kid was put in a tuff situation, tried to bulk up to play the 4 because we needed him to but never seemed able to turn the corner as a 4. Good guy, represented the school well, not as respected as he deserved to be IMO. So to say Zion reminds you of kevin is a strong compliment to the kid in my book!

It's so nice to know we have a freakishly long 6'6 PG already committed for 2018.

I played ball against K. Madden many times on the Granville outside court and he couldn't have been more than 6'3"-6'4"; so he was up against a real challenge to play 4. He also had a knee injury IIRC that hampered his explosion. I would love any player that had his game and any where close to KM's hops!

...except I have doubts he'll be a PG here.

does it really matter? he's awesome and he'll play wherever he's best.

That said, I think Dotson and Hamilton are important and love where we currently stand with them.

Saw Dotson this summer and all I thought of was JB.

It matters that we have leaky in as much as he is already 6'7" and growing and IMO will never play PG in college, if he works on his shooting and he needs to, he is a wing or maybe a 2, could end up around 6'9" by the time he gets to us. Henson, Ingram, and Anthony Davis are 3 guys that came to college as 6'9" guys that used to be PGs. At 6'7" what is Theo now, a distributing wing, more of a wing/point?

I see some JB in the way Dotson moves, not sure I can say he is as skilled as Joel was at the same point or has the grit, may have it but I need to see more to be totally sure but he has some of JBs movements and I look for that. Getting Dotson, Hamilton or Zion, leaky, and a big man would be a nice 2018 haul, if we can get 2 or 3 bigs from 2017.

I agree that Leaky may indeed grow out of the PG position, but working on those guard skills was what separated A. Davis from the other bigs in his class. His working on his shot and ball handling will be great for UNC and him! It will also help ensure he is a lottery pick and will improve UNC's rep as well as his bank account!

Yeah, as Dave said, the shot is his biggest thing to work on.

From an interview I saw after he committed it sounded like he understands that the staff thinks he will grow out of PG, and honestly, if you go watch that big Team Felton comeback in UA (when Leaky and Jalek were playing together), although Leaky was technically playing Point, that didn't always go well, and then Jalek basically took over the game on the ball. But as you said, having those skills is a great thing and if he ends up a 6'7-8 Wing with a good handle that's a bonus.

Yeah, as a HS Soph JB could already finish in Big traffic, create his own shot if needed and take over a game.... and was statewide POY in the 3rd most populous state in the nation.

On the other side of that I do see good court presence, awareness and skills in Dotson. Not gonna hold him to impossibly lofty standards just yet. Definitely want to see more of him this coming season and hope he continues to improve.

Yup, a wing with tight handles at least OR a 6'9" 4 that can shoot and handle would be a dream either way!

So we now have Coby White and Rechon Black committed and we have targeted Dotson and Jairus Hamilton. Are we running out of scholarships?

Hmmm...Let's see, figure we sign 2 more in 2017 and Tony isn't around for his Jr year.

Seventh, BRob, Kenny Will, Jalek, Platek, Leaky, Coby, 2017 unsigned player, 2017 unsigned player.

That's only 9. If we give Luke one then it's 10. We at a minimum would still have 3 left. If we bring in a 5 man class in 2017, then we'll have 2.

For reference, White is ranked No. 21 in 2018 class by ESPN. Leaky Black is No. 26

New #UNC commit Coby White joins Rechon Black as the Heels' two 2018 commits. Backcourt = Black and White http://northcarolina.247sports.com/Bolt/Four-star-2018-guard-commits-to-UNC-46480767 …

Coby White was offered on Monday by #UNC. Clearly didn't want to wait long to commit to the in-state flagship school.

CarolinaBlue.com @UNC247
Per the @247Sports Composite, #UNC commit Coby White is ranked as the No. 3 combo guard and No. 79 overall http://northcarolina.247sports.com/Bolt/Four-star-2018-guard-commits-to-UNC-46480767 …

Jerry Meyer @jerrymeyer247
#CrystalBall for Coby White 100% UNC. Picks came in after coveted offer. He is a dynamic playmaker in 2018 class.

New #UNC commit reminds me a little of a young Joseph Forte. Smooth guard who can create his own shot. Slick handle. More SG than PG.

What about Rush? I know he is currently a walk on.

Good signing of White, so we'll have a PG for that year along with Leaky who will grow more into a forward position. Plus we are trending for Zion Williamson, Jairus Hamilton, and Cameron Reddish, and someone said Reddish could boil down to us or duke.

So all in all I'm feeling pretty solid about 2018. It's 2017 I'm shaky about.

we currently don't have the scholarships to take all these players

I would say we are out of them for guards. Hamilton or Zion are takes for big wings but I would think getting White takes us out for Dotson, Sexton, or spoon.

I agree with this. If Spoon or Sexton committed, I think Roy would have backed off on Dotson and White. Since White is committed, I expect Roy to cool on Sexton, Spoon and Dotson. He will start going full force on the bigs/wings. (See Wilkes already setting up an OV)

Interesting to see how this Wilkes thing may play out. Does it turn the heat up on Randolph to move up his time line, does it maybe inspire a big or 2 to jump now and not risk us having a scholly crunch? It is a domino that is interesting to see where it falls.

I'm also interested to see how this unfolds. I really like Randolph's game but you can't go wrong with him or Wilkes. I wonder if things cool between UNC and Dotson/Spoon now that were loaded at the guard position.

Yeah, I think we can close the book now on guards, not including wings in saying that.

So by end of August or early September we should know on Watson & Wilkes commits (we hope) so would we go with them or a Robinson/Bamba combo? I know the Rob/Bam combo would be nice...or Huffman as mentioned before...kids are going to have to make hard choices.

If Watson and Wilkes are ready to commit then..... hell yeah. Who is Robinson? Mitchell Robinson committed to Western Kentucky a month ago. I sure as heck wouldn't wait on Bamba.

I think he's referring to Brandon Randolph. The idea being that because he goes to the same school as Bamba he would influence Bamba to come here too.

IMO, if we get Wilkes and Watson willing to commit you take them. Now maybe you can get a Huffman ready as well and then decide if it is worth risking a slow play on Huffman or wait on a Bamba or PJ but at some point you have to tell those fellas it is time to make a decision or we have go in another direction.. I think we will know when the official visit announcements happen or maybe better said don't happen.

I take a Vanderbilt if he is willing but Kal has been on that kid for a long time and kal has offered other 5stars at his position so Vandy could feel a lil cheated on, still believe Kal has him on lock down.
