3-4 D under Bateman

People believe Bateman will run the 3-4 D at UNC like with Army. It is intriguing and possibly cutting edge in the ACC dominated by the 4-3, but also possibly dangerous for recruiting.

Many DTs prefer to be in the 4-3 and same goes for traditional DEs. I fear us losing stud DTs and DEs to ACC rivals because those recruits and their HS coaches think the 4-3 helps them make the NFL.

UVA runs the 3-4 and they have a hard time getting stud DL players...

That is my one worry with him as DC.

I want UNC to win not merely the Coastal but the ACC and be in the playoff. And you cannot win it all without at least a 2 deep at DT - minimum of 4 healthy, high quality DTs. And the same at DE - minimum 4 high quality DEs.

Those are minimums.

That hybrid 3-4, really has an extra linebacker that can also play end. More times than not they are walked down to the line of scrimmage.

Were we getting stud DE’s and DT’s last couple of years??

Jones and Dalton both were 4 stars. Lawler is a 4 star.

Lawler might move to OLB like a rusher.

The 3-4 can work as long as we do not treat the DL as blocking fodder for LBs.

Strowbridge is perfect size for the DE position in the 3-4. Franco at 6-6 270 might find life as a DE in this system compared to the 4-3.

The key thing is selling it to HS kids who also look at Clempson, mooU, FSU, etc where they run traditional Ds.

How many NFL teams run 3-4
I would sell that angle
But if you want to stay in the college world Alabama runs a base 3-4 and does ok

NFL teams also have freak 320lbs NT to stiffen their DL.

I do not recall seeing Bama running it.

If we get the DL players for it then I have no problem with it.

Saban is a disciple of the 3-4 here is a link to a 2018 D highlight for Alabama D

Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Tenn and South Carolina all call our defenses a 3/4 but like the poster above said we all look like a 4-3 with a OLB on the line as an End, sometimes up and sometimes down.

In football today you are nickel basically every play and so everyone in the country is playing mostly a 4-2-5 set regardless of what you are calling the positions.

When you have 6 or 7 run gaps to fill and 5 possible people to cover there’s not that many ways you can do it. Defensive football doesn’t give you the same variety as does offensive.

Bingo. Whether it be 3-4 or 4-3. It’s still
Gap principle football on defense. Not a huge difference really because a 3-4 looks a lot like a 4-3 most of the time.

I am interested if we move Dorn and Ford to LB given our lack of depth there. Both are over 6-1 and could bulk up to 225 this off season. Dorn could easily cover TBs and TEs in pass coverage from LB.

Woolfork played well at FS in Dorn's absence so he can lock down that position. Possibly move Rene to safety too for more nickel coverage and speed.

Dorn is perfect where he is.

3-4 can become a 5-2 in a heartbeat
Exactly.

But you need large, tough DTs, at least 4 of them ready to go, 2 or 3 larger DEs, and some smaller DEs who can be made into standard 3-4 LBs, as well as enough quality LBs.

We need a grad transfer LB with some size.

A blind hog finds an acorn now and then...Bronco will be run out of town by Mack in 1-2 years.
They've been really lucky with their QBs gleaned from the grad xfer market, so that has helped them get a few wins. They're in better shape now than when he took over. They've got the 30th recruiting class nationally - not bad.

I think Rene should stay at corner unless Sails and Cotman are suddenly amazing. Greg Ross wasn't ready yet last yr.
