3-Star DC Defensive End Cook Enjoying His Process With UNC

We have explained the change in approach a few times. This is tactical more than anything else.
Seems like an odd tactic to go after players who aren't as good as other players. If I had faith that this staff could find a bunch of undervalued players and make them better, then it might make some sense.

They don't care about star rankings in their eveluations, but it does matter at times with respect to the money era we are now in. Some of the higher-rated kids command cash up front and UNC isn't going to pay. Also, some kids are more likely to hit the portal quickly than others, and the staff wants to avoid bringing them as much as possible.

Interesting, but the two best defensive players on the team were both low 3-stars in HS and their commitments were criticzed by some of the fans.

I'm sure they aren't looking at 247 or rivals rankings to find players, but rankings are usually a good indicator of how good a player can be. It's not a coincidence that Alabama, Clemson, OSU, etc have high ranking players. Not bringing in talent because you are afraid it will leave makes no sense. Most players leave because they don't get playing time. That won't change no matter what the rating is.

As far as the money goes, I hope you mean we can't afford to match the numbers. If Mack isn't willing to pay because of some moral high ground, then he should be fired. His job is to win games doing everything he can within the rules. Like it or not, these kids can get money and it's within the rules. There's absolutely no reason we should handcuff ourselves.

They aren't straight up paying HS kids, it's still against the rules, and a lot of athletes and schools could well be in serious trouble down the road. They aren't not bringing in kids because they're "afraid" they will leave, they know enough about how things work in the NIL & portal era, they are working around it.

As I said, I have gone fully in-depth about this on premium. Come over and you'll see the fuller picture.
