Those are the minutes our starters played in the James Madison game.

Can someone explain why Hubert is going iron man?

Other PT:

13 - Puff
12 - Trimble
4 - Dunn
2 - Nickel

Just seems to be the way he coaches. Not the ideal way I think, but at this point I don't put a ton of stock in the idea that we're going to extend the bench. Seems like he likes a 6 man rotation.

It’s disappointing to me, I want to see more minutes & production from the bench. I think we’re going to lose some players if it doesn’t change.

Because he wants to win. If we'd get a large lead in the 2nd half, he'd be more likely to play them but our starters cant seem to put teams in a deep hole mid way the 2nd half of the game.

I agree he needs to spread the playing time because we will have at least 3 players in the portal. Styles I think is gone….Dunn probably….Nickel is a scorer and he’s not the type to sit the bench.

I hope it's just temporary. HD may have been waiting for Armando to show up. Or for RJ and Caleb to play better together.

He may also have wanted to give Puff a lot of minutes with the starters.

But none of that seems to require over 30 minutes from any of our starters.

We have 1 more creampuff. It would be nice to have at least a solid 8-man rotation in place before we play guys like Villanova, MSU and Indiana.

Idk. Great question. None of these guys except for maybe Leaky has deserved to play 30 minutes plus a game this year to date. Hubert has missed an enormous opportunity to Send a very direct message to the starters while developing the bench. I understand last year playing the iron five because no one else minus Puff was reliable or ready. With the overall talent on this team that is not the case. Seth, Dunn, Tyler and now Puff need the experience and run in order to develop and enhance their rolls on the team. Plus, when Jalen Washington comes back that should help out immensely once he gets acclimated to the College game and he gets his conditioning up to par. Styles has to relax and just focus on fundamentals. But Hubert is forcing the subs when they do come in to press and try to make something big happen in order to stay on the court. Styles is an athlete. He is not a shooter and unfortunately his handle and hands are way too loose. But you can tell when he does come in that he is trying too hard. Guys, so far are not playing with any kind of joy, fun, passion and even gratitude. No way does Nance deserve these type of minutes to begin with. I am not comparing him to Brady either. I know it’s only 4 games into the season but for a veteran team they are making basic and fundamental plays a lot harder than they need to be. Guys don’t run to the bench during timeouts or to the huddle before free throws. Our players fall down and guys are not running to pick them up. They walk the ball out of the net to throw it inbounds. It’s all of the little things that mean everything in playing Carolina Basketball.

I feel that Hubert is big on playing those he feels are the best players to be on the court for each given game the vast majority of the game. Playing 30 minutes is still sitting out a full quarter of the game. I felt that he would play the starting 5 all around 30 minutes and more barring injuries or foul trouble, since we have a very vetern group which is a rarity nowadays at this level. I think he sees that as a big advantage, and he expectsa lot of them. I did hope the non conference would allow for bigger minutes to be dispersed from comfortable leads. That hasn't been the case as of yet.

Right or wrong I think he feels practice is where you develop, and it's your job to be ready when needed as a reserve, but not a right to get x amount of minutes to develop in game. It doesn't mean he does not have confidence in them, just that he does not feel they are on the level of those playing ahead of them.

Trimble has got a lot of early run, Puff will as well I believe. I think he feels they have earned rotational minutes. The others are as needed at this point. They will be called upon, so be ready when your name is called.

It was because James Madison made a run to cut our lead in the 2nd half, so Hubert stuck with the starters longer to ensure the game didn't get away from us.

I think Hubert will play Puff longer once his conditioning is 100%. Then he will probably get 20+ minutes a game. Trimble earning double digit minutes this early is a great sign.

I agree and man it was great to see puff in there. He had what seemed like several tipped ball or passes. He’s definitely long. Trimble is a dog for sure. His d is good. A couple of his fouls we weak if anything at all. He’s got a very strong base

i know enough about hubert to know that if the likes of styles, dunn, etc earn the minutes in practice, they’ll get them in the game. our first 5 hasn’t been great to start the year but we’ve also had to leave them in long stretches because said bench players come in and things have went south at times against inferior comp. there’s arguments to both sides but it’s an easy one when you’re still winning. let’s say he rides kids like dunn and styles for long periods and we lose to charleston or somebody else and then those same folks would ask why you lose a game with all americans sitting on the bench. all that to say, there’s merit to both arguments. i think hubert being a young coach will heir on the side of what he’s most comfortable with regardless of timing in the season. he just hasn’t had a lot of time in the saddle to trust the process so to speak, whereas Roy was stubbornly (at times) committed to.

These non conference games do matter, and avoiding bad losses matters. Last year the ACC was awful non conference, and it mattered, that will matter again in tiers for the NET from season performance

It has been another rough start this year for the league early on. Half being downright bad with some marquee names struggling mightily. Louisville, Florida State, Notre Dame, Syracuse, awful starts, plus the not expected to be good Pitt, BC, Clemson, types have been as bad as expected.

Even the decent starts Va.Tech, Miami, Wake types have had damaging type losses already.

Virginia has some really good wins, NC State, Duke, and UNC have been solid in their matchups, although the latter two just by avoiding the bad loss or close call to lower level opponents. Hopefully the league kicks it into gear. Having a better showing this year in the Big 10/ACC challenge will be important too.

UNC can only control their matchups, hopefully we can get some quality wins pre conference this year, last year we got thumped in those type matchups, regularly early on, with the exception of Michigan.

HOF Roy had the cachet and the leash to lose and lose often. Nobody who had any power would dare speak against him! Hubs does not. Losing against inferior comp means he doesn't get the chance to grow into the position and change the culture! His philosophy that you earn it in practice is just as good as any other out there! Pulling a starter to send a message also lets the person who dogs it in practice know that they might get an opportunity despite their lackluster efforts! The starters receive their messages often and if you have watched the sideline huddles, they sometimes receive the message LOUD and clear! Watch for Puff, Dunn, Trimble, Nickel, and eventually Washington to play significant minutes. 10 man rotations are plenty deep and when it happens, it will mean they have fully bought into what the team needs! If Styles or McKoy want to play, it is up to them to work hard enough to show the team they are needed.

I always thought Roy’s playing his bench liberally early on was very smart. He did a great job of developing his depth which not only helped as the season progressed and inevitable injuries occurred, but served to keep players happy and develop team chemistry. I gave Hubert a pass last year because of transfers/injuries and the fact he was a rookie HC. But I am very concerned that he doesn’t appear to want to play our bench much. We were fortunate that our iron five didn’t suffer a serious injury which kept one of them out for a significant time.

With the talent and experience we have, some of the undisciplined play we’ve seen is troubling. I hope Hubert doesn’t make the mistake of trying to be best friends with the players, like Mack has done. Coaches are mentors and teachers, not BFF’s. That distinction cannot be overstated.

Styles will transfer out probably. Didn’t play a drop today
I hope not but it's a reasonable concern. The argument against that is that Leaky graduates and we don't yet have a SF in the 2023 class (and no outstanding offers). Nor would I expect that to be a priority in the portal. But that still leaves Puff, T-Nick, and Justin as competition. The good news for Styles is that 1 or more of those guys - I'm looking at T-Nick and Justin - will probably be getting his minutes at PF, but it's still a tough spot to be in. And of course that depends on how healthy Washington is, and how ready Zayden and Shaver are.

It's not hard to imagine T-Nick bulking up and being next year's stretch 4.

I'm a bit worried about Dunn, too. We all expect Caleb to leave, but Wilcher is coming in. I don't know about you guys but Wilcher looks like the real deal to me, and I won't be surprised if he is getting starter minutes (maybe off the bench, or maybe starting) early in his first year.

Personally I think Dunn has looked good in short minutes this year. But Trimble clearly has the edge on demanding minutes, and for PT next year, as well.
