5 year old sonJordan who plays in 5th grade travel and is a huge UNC fan

Berry is his favorite player. Loves him

Berry is a great role model for your son. Someone said during last night's game against Louisville that no one puts in more work in the gym than Joel Berry. And he will leave UNC with ACC and National Championship rings and his jersey in the rafters.

Cute kid ! Hope the parents will let him be a kid and enjoy his youth ! I am 48 yrs old and I experienced it as a parent and a coach , where kids want to play sports and the parents take all the pleasure out of it by pressuring the kids to work so hard and excel.
My son played travel baseball with a group of good friends who went to school together from Kindergarten thru high school . One kid Brad was a great athlete from tball up but the father pressured him in practice and in games and forced him to take lessons all the way thru his sr. yr. in high school. Well the kids are 3 yrs removed from high school , Brad quit the baseball team his sr. yr. and got messed up in drugs. He is clean now , that is what I am told . He is trying to go to school but has no relationship with the father now.

Now on the flip side another kid on that team was in the same enviroment where the crazy dad thought he had a future big league player on his hands. This kid is a good student and is playing Division 3 baseball so I guess it turned out ok.

My point is a lot of parents believe their kids have more athletic talent than they actually have so they push them and take all the fun out of athletics. Sports are a wonderful thing if you are allowed to pursue them for the love of the game instead of a means of one day making a living at them. This is not a shot at the parents of the 5 yr. old in the video , just my thoughts on youth athletics.

Good post E-townheel. I hope the people who post about their kids realize that 99% of them will not play high-level sports, no matter how hard they work at it.

It's easy to see someone like Berry and think it's just about hard work, but sports takes both incredible discipline and incredible genetics at the highest levels. Work ethic is a necessary but not sufficient requirement for success. There are probably 4 million boys who want to play point guard at a blue blood school, and only 4 of them can actually be starters in a given year. And the least talented two of the four will be lamented as not good enough. :)

I speak as someone who spent 363 days a year playing baseball up to the point of low-level college ball before realizing it was a distraction towards building a successful adult life. Sports is a lottery ticket where 99% get nothing and a few people get millions. Math is like the reverse, 99% of the time you end up with a solid job with a very small chance of failure. I wonder how much better off most kids would be if their parents spent an hour a day doing math problems with them instead of shooting hoops.

Very good point. Kid plays 3 sports and doesn’t get pushed at all. As a coach and ex-player on 3 levels I understand you. Basketball is his favorite sport. He has 2 brothers who play overseas and he watched them play since birth. He wants to be better than his brothers. Lol. Love your point and makes a lot of sense. Thank you

You sound like a good dad and similar to me , I have a 20 yr. old and 18yr old and 15 yr old and a 6 yr. old with the older ones i worked a lot more than I do now so I didn't get to spend as much time with the older kids so now with the wisdom and experience of how fast they grow up I cherish the time with my 6 yr old daughter , who by the way her middle name is Carmichael , named after Cartwright Carmichael . I love sports but she is into princess and angels and nothing but girly stuff but I do what ever she wants cause she is my last baby ! Point of rant is enjoy the babies they grow up so fast.
