Bruce Feldman's Top 5 Heisman Trophy candidates after Week 5

I can't remember the last time my No. 1 Heisman guy lost and I didn't bump him out of the top spot, but that's the case this weekend with Louisville losing. Lamar Jackson has been fantastic all season and even in defeat, he still has a pretty sizable gap over the field on my list at this point. Photo: Headshot/Grant Halverson

Mitch Trubisky, UNC, QB
I thought about finding room for Deshaun Watson and Christian McCaffrey, but it's time to give some love to Trubisky, who was superb in the Heels’ win at UNC. Actually, he's been superb all season with a 13-0 TD-INT ratio, while completing 76 percent of his passes. He’s also run for four TDs. Photo: Grant Halverson

Derek Barnett, Tennessee, DE
Once again, the junior D-lineman helped bail the Vols out of a deep hole. His sack/forced fumble gave UT a lead at UGA and a few minutes later, he got pressure on Jacob Eason and forced an INT. Barnett's leadership is also off the charts, as Tennessee finds its way back to prominence despite being without three of their best players on D. Photo: Joe Robbins

Greg Ward, Houston, QB
Ailing shoulder or not, Ward was superb in UH's revenge game as the Cougars walloped UConn Thursday night. Ward thrown eight TDs against just two INTs and is completing 71 percent of his passes. He's also run for five TDs and is a big factor in UH's run game. Photo: Bob Levey

J.T. Barrett, Ohio State, QB
OSU had no trouble crushing Rutgers as Barrett improved his numbers to a robust 14-2 TD-INT ratio and he's now connecting on 69 percent of his passes. Better still, his leadership behind a rebuilt O-line and nurturing a young group of skill guys has been strong. Photo: Jamie Sabau

Lamar Jackson, Louisville QB
The spectacular sophomore faced his roughest test--against a very fast D in a hostile place. Despite some early struggles, Jackson was terrific, especially in the second half where the Cards rolled up 363 yards and Jackson went 17-23 — and burned the Tigers for several big plays on the ground. On the season Jackson is averaging 463 yards of total offense per game, trailing only Texas Tech's Pat Mahomes and Jackson has faced much stiffer competition. Photo: Grant Halverson
