Next year might not have Championship aspirations, but Roy has some players. Bradley becomes a monster, Theo scores a little more, KW plays just a little better than he did this year, and Felton learns quick with a sophmore Woods. Next year is going to be fun. Maye will be a big part of next year.
First, I am going to go ahead and assume Joel comes back, just to much points to this IMO. Now we will not have Meeks, Hicks, Nate, Stillman, and I don't think it is a stretch at all to realize we will not have Justin either. To me, clearly Justin, Meeks, and Hicks are the hard ones to replace.
Let's take worst case, meaning we do not get Knox or a grad transfer big man. That would mean we have 3 pretty much locked in starters in Joel, Theo, and Tony. means we have to figure out who starts at the power forward spot and the 2 guard spot (I assume Theo at the 3 with no Knox or Justin).
Candidates for our starting power forward spot, Luke may be the favorite out of the gate, he has played exclusively at the 4 this season, acquitted himself pretty well in a reserve role, has been the first big off the bench, even ahead of Tony. Easy to pencil him in as the 4th starter at this point but not sure I would lock that just yet. Huffman, ready to play body, been a while since we got a big man that didn't either have to eat his way in to being able to compete at this level or lose pounds to get there. Body wise Huffman should be ready to compete, nice aggression, looks to pretty much dunk everything or stick back but we have had a lot of bigs that began that way, kinda what Tony is now frankly. But can Huffman add some to his game, can he add a jumper in the mid range he is working it it, jury out. But if his offensive game expands just a little before next season he could make a challenge to Luke for the starting tap, doubtful but lets see how it plays out. Manley maybe, I am not sold he will be nearly as ready but again, we just need to wait and see.
Hicks has not exactly lite up the score boards consistently this season, the foul issues have persisted so the question becomes is he going to be as hard to replace as maybe we would have thought before this season? Luke have given us more than we expected and Hicks not as much as we expected, isn't that true?
The 2 guard spot is IMO going to be a wide open race, I know many think Jalek will come in and claim it but if he does that he will have to beat out kenny and I can see both BRob and 7th getting some time there. I suggest all 3 of those fellas get up a few hundred shots a day in the off season because that starting spot is up for grabs. Even PLatek could carve out room, he may be the best natural shooter of the bunch.
The problem comes in when we go to the bench, how ready will Huffman be, I think more than most expect. How ready will Manley be, you guys know I have a concern there but lets see, maybe the off season is exactly what he needs to get his legs under him but the kid really needs to get stronger physically and get his stamina up. I think our back court wil be fine 2 deep, front court is my worry.
Now if we were to get Knox, it causes a domino effect for us in a good way. Because I would see Knox step in as starter at the wing, frankly it would not hurt my feelings to see Theo start at the 4 so he and Knox could switch off assignments with KNox in more the justin role on offense & Theo taking a big man out in space and toying with him. It then makes it easier to bring Luke in for the same role he has snow, 1st big off the bench at the 4 and not have so much pressure on Huffman to perform right away, kinda similar to the way we have used Tony this season. That would allow Manley to be brought around slowly and I think that may be the better plan.
I think with KNox, we could make another run for the ACC regular season, lower margin for error but depending on what he, Huffman, and jalek can bring as frosh means a lot. With out Knox, it will be tuff, think we could find a way to 3rd in the ACC, maybe with a touch of fortune 2nd depending on our jump shooting, especially from the 2 spot.
