ACC, United Way of Central Carolinas Partner To Support Reading & Attendance
New ACC-United Way partnership set in conjunction with Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – The Atlantic Coast Conference has partnered with the United Way of Central Carolinas on a five-year agreement in support of a youth-education based charitable initiative associated with the Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship Game.
The partnership will focus on improving reading proficiency and attendance, key components to raising the high school graduation rate for at-risk students.
“We’re proud to join United Way of Central Carolinas’ efforts to increase graduation, literacy and attendance rates – causes which mean so much to the Atlantic Coast Conference and our members,” said ACC Commissioner John Swofford. “This initiative builds upon our league’s 20 year partnership with United Way and continues our efforts toward making a difference in the communities that host ACC Championships.”
“When the ACC approached us about working together, we quickly embraced the opportunity to have them partner on our initiative focused on high school graduation,” said Sean Garrett, United Way’s executive director. “The stature of the ACC will help bring greater community involvement in United Way’s work, and it makes perfect sense to collaborate with a conference comprised of the very colleges where many of our youth will aspire to attend after graduation.”
The ACC/United Way Reading and Attendance Challenge will be the centerpiece of the initiative and will include area students, their parents or guardians, and Mecklenburg and Cabarrus county partner agencies. Those children who read the most books or have the best attendance during thechallenge period at their agency will be provided with an all-expenses covered outing to the Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship Game and will be recognized on the field at Bank of America Stadium during a timeout. This year’s game will be played on the evening of Saturday, Dec. 5, and will be televised nationally by ABC or ESPN.

A family four pack ticket package is available that includes a donation of $5 per ticketto generate additional funding for the United Way of Central Carolinas’ efforts to improve reading proficiency and attendance in Mecklenburg and Cabarrus counties.
Other highlights of the partnership include an ACC mascot visit to the United Way of Central Carolinas partner agencythat performs exceptionally well in the Challenge on the Friday prior to the Championship Game and the ACC Fan 5K and Kids Mascot Run, set for Saturday, Dec. 5 in Uptown Charlotte. Proceeds from the 5k will benefit the ACC/United Way educational initiative.
