Andrea Adelson on Jim Phillips

I hit post way too early.

What Jim Phillips has done to unify the ACC

"In the year since Jim Phillips became ACC commissioner, he has made it his mission to prioritize football."

If he truly has done so, he is the first ACC Commissioner to have done so. The basketball-idiots would have ruined the ACC going to 12 if they had gotten their way, and Swofford caved to them because they had so much power among so many university administrations. Even with the VT power play, the damage had been done long before, leaving ACC football well behind SEC and Big Ten football, well behind the new kid Big 12 football.

"Phillips has not been shy about saying he wants the league to reimagine football, and he told ESPN last year that at some point, the ACC would go to the NCAA and ask that divisions no longer be required for conferences with 12 or more teams to hold a championship game."

I first posted, on 4 or 5 sites, that the ACC needed to be able to scrap divisions and play without them before we added Pitt and Cuse. With 14 members. we really need that come to pass.

With the 4 ACC schools that play a season ending game vs. an SEC in-state rival, and the ND games, and the possibility that each of us might play 1 Alliance game (vs either a BT of Pac team) every year, there is no way that the ACC moves to a 9 game league schedule. If you dump divisions and play an 8 game league slate with a 14 member league, you arrange 3 + 5 (5).

With 14 teams in the league, each team has 13 league foes. That means it is very easy to have each team get 3 annual rivals, and then play each of the remaining 10 league teams twice over a 4 year period. That would end the nonsense of UNC playing Wake OOC (assuming that ESPN does not squeeze the ACC to drop Wake in order to get a better TV deal). Each ACC team would play every ACC team at least twice over 4 years. That is great variety.

No team in the ACC needs to have any more than 3 annual rivals. UNC's obvious trio is UVA, Dook, Moo.

A very important quote, and probably the most intriguing in the article, is this, in regard to the proposed expanded playoff: "Jack tried to swindle us into going for it. That thing got squashed back at ACC media day," one source said.'

Jack is ND AD Swarbrick. He is described in this instance as being an underhanded servant of ND's selfishness aligned with SEC desires.

If we scrap divisions and play 3 annual rivals while swapping between half o the remaining 10 teams in the league each year (for 8 league games per year), here is my list of each teams annual rivals:

UNC - UVA, dook, NCSU
UVA - UNC, VT, BC
Dook - UNC, Wake, GT
VT - UVA, Miami, Lou
FSU - Miami, Clemson, GT

Wake - Dook, NCSU, Lou
NCSU - UNC, Wake, Clem
BC - Pitt, Cuse, UVA

That is telling....calling Swarbrick a swindler. Took off his gloves.

Yep, but Swarbrick is a slimy lawyer who likely has made a deal already with the BT and who does not care what anybody thinks or knows.
