Let me start first by saying that this ain't my cup of tea, or at least hasn't been up until now. I'm much more comfortable when I'm tipsy at a honky tonk or hole-in-the-wall concert venue than I am when I'm in a sport coat at the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.

However, I've been talking to this girl who's studying to become an opera singer and sings classical, opera, all that stuff. I took her to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra last week at her request because there was two acts she wanted to see. Both were from Russian composers (or writers, or whatever you call them). First act was Shostakovich's Symphony No. 14 -- it was super dark and moody and strange, but I kinda dug it. Second act was one of Rachmaninoff's works. That one was more like stereotypical orchestra-y lol and was easier to listen to.

Anyway...........anyone on here a fan of this kinda stuff? This girl is REALLY into this stuff since it's her major and job, so I'm trying to make an effort here. Any education and advice y'all could provide would be appreciated ;)

I tell you this though, I now know what it's like to be at a sports game and not know anything about sports. Everyone around me in the theater would like react strongly to certain parts and ooh and ahh, and I was just there wondering what was happening and trying to not fall the F asleep lol.

I don't know jack about opera or classical music other than every now and then, I can dig on some Andrea Bocelli.

I had season tickets to Atlanta Opera back in mid 90s-early 2000s when it was in the Fox. My wife loved it.
Only thing I really learned was that if the show was in Italian, it was ok....German or French, not so much. Invest in a good flask.

Gooooooood call on the flask. I will have to get in on that action.

And yeah, she's a country girl from west Georgia but can also speak fluent Italian due to opera, so that's kinda cool I guess.

Ha! My wife is a country girl from Brooks GA...but went to law school and is fluent in taking me to the cleaners if I screw up.

if yours is anything like mine, you may want to buy two good flasks.(because sometimes she'll want to take one too!)

Good luck.

I know where Brooks is. I'm biased, but I swear they just make 'em better in Georgia. I like Carolina girls as much as the next guy, but a good country Georgia girl can't be beat.

And we'll see on the two flasks; I'm not sure I'm ready for that level of commitment yet :D

True he's good. I also listened to the score from the LOTR movies in college as study music. That's about the extent of my knowledge.

I took a class in college - "Music Appreciation" - as an elective because I just needed the credits. I knew absolutely nothing about the class and did no research before signing up. I honestly thought is would have covered all genres. It didn't. Straight up classical. Chopin, Beethoven, Bach, all those guys. It was cool to learn a little about that and I didn't hate it (I mean, sitting in lazy-boy's with headphones on listening to any kind of music for 45 minutes beats doing a lot of other kinds of work). But I retained <1% of what was taught in that class.

Easily the best class I took at Carolina was "Intro to Country Music." You wanna talk about a phenomenally interesting class because we started from the very beginning in the 1910s and 20s when Appalachian folks would literally come down from the mountains and sing into a can and make money for it. And just learning about how the music wove into the South and its development at the time.

I didn't care much for country music until I took that class and ever since then, I friggin love it, spanning from 40s and 50s stuff all the way to present.

Hey mister, I don't mean to be tellin' tales out of school, but there's a feller in there that'll pay you ten dollars if you sing into his can.

I highly recommend the Flash Gordon soundtrack, as performed by Queen.

All kidding aside, Mozart and Puccini are widely regarded as two of the greatest opera composers. Try listening to the Marriage of Figaro and La Boheme (sounds like "la bo EM"). Better yet, try watching them with subtitles. It may not be your kind of music, and you may not fully appreciate the complexity of the compositions, but you'll probably find at least a few melodies that are catchy that you may have even heard before without realizing it.

Houston Grand Opera is doing Marriage of Figaro now...actually bought tickets for this Friday after THN11's original post and plan to surprise the wife.

Well that, and I also enjoy getting my needs taken care of so....

That's my passive-aggressive way of telling you I'm disappointed you're only interested in opera/symphonies because you're trying to get in some girl's pants.
Bro, "trying" ?

ETA: But really, I'm giving it an honest go. It's at least interesting to me. Classical music, I can get down with. Her love of everything Italy and Italian, that I'll have more trouble with. Not a huge fan.

What's wrong with Italy? Fantastic country with great culture. What's not to like?

And there is no way you found a Tinder chick who goes to the opera, unless by opera you mean the drunk sitting next to you at the Varsity singing American Pie.

Sings* opera

And yes I did.

ETA: Also, I avoid the Varsity like the plague. Overrated and destroys your stomach almost immediately.

Joking guys, goodness :p

I've never been to Italy so I have no idea lol. My only experience with Italians who are less than third generation Italian is Guidos I met in New Jersey........so basically your typical New Jersian.

Oh, and I don't like the Italian national soccer team because their style of play is sooooooooooooooooo boring.

I'm sure if I went to Italy I'd love it. My parents went for three weeks a few years backs (didn't take me obviously) and said it was the best trip they've ever taken.

Heres some new age opera i've been enjoying

U gotta make it to the first 50 seconds to appreciate it

I'd DEF hit that asian girl dancing in her night gown.

I'm done with you. I can go for about 10 Varsity hot dogs right about now. Operas? pfft...who needs operas when you have delicious hot dogs?
COME SAY IT TO MY FACE.

But really, ehh, I've never been blown away by it. I see it more as a novelty than a place to go when you're actually hungry. Plus, Atlanta has Cookout now, so.....

Also, Crystal Pepsi sucks and so do Fruit Loops. What up?
