April 14, 2003...in 14 years since he was hired..............

Is this the best first 14 years a coach has ever had at a school? Has to be right?

We are the luckiest fan base in basketball.

That would probably go to UCLA as far as the best 14 yr stretch
He was saying best first 14 years of a coach at their school, not 14 year stretch at any time in a career. When you say UCLA I assume you are referring to Wooden. He actually didn't win his first title until his 16th year I believe.

Sorry missed the "first" part

Someone could go back and read some of the comments made about Roy on this board by alleged UNC fans over the last few years and they would never believe the stats you posted above - If they didn't already know the truth.

Roy Williams and his Teams have accounted for exactly HALF of All of UNC's Men's Basketball NCAA National Championships. In 14 years.

His back to back Championship Games with the Natty coming home to UNC this year is the greatest stretch of coaching in Men's NCAA basketball history. Period.

Roy did this under a seemingly endless cloud of the NCAA Witch Hunt that significantly hampered his recruiting, and in "the age of the one and dun" where all the top rated Me First guys want to play at schools that kowtow to them as "feature players" instead of offering great coaching and Team First Basketball.

Wooden always had a Pipeline of the majority of the best talent due to Sam Gilbert and pretty much the easiest NCAA pathways ever during his amazing run.

IMO no other coach in NCAA MBB History could have done what Roy and Co. have accomplished under the same circumstances.

I cannot state strongly enough how proud I am and how fortunate we are to have Roy Williams as Head Coach of UNC's Men's Basketball!

I'm looking at this pic from 2003 and Roy looks so young, but I remember at the time I thought Roy looked so old from all the stress of making his decision. Ultimately, I believe he came back because of his love for Dean. The Tar Heels were in trouble and Roy came to the rescue.

I said the same thing.

Then again 14 years will age anyone.....

I think we've all criticized him at one point. But theres nothing more he can do to make everyone a believer. He'll go down as maybe the most underrated coach of all time, which is insane when you look at his resume. Its easy for people to knock him and undervalue what he's done, but its all unwarranted. I see people knock his 2005 title because they werent "his guys." I dont think people understand how hard it can be to take a group of players that didnt commit to that coach and make them buy in and win a championship together. And his work the last 2 years speaks for itself. Like a poster above said, no one has ever had to overcome more to win a championship than Roy has had to overcome in the last 5 years. He's a top 5 coach of all time, that can never be disputed now. Youll also never find a coach that loves his school and his players more than Roy does. He had no reason to come here, he returned Kansas to an elite program and I'm sure he would have at least 1 title there if he had stayed. He came here strictly due to his love for Carolina and Dean Smith. I wouldnt trade him for anyone

Agree with everything you've written besides this line.... I'd say there are a number of posters on here who could proudly say they don't criticise Roy (even if they don't always agree with what he's doing)

"Williams is currently ranked seventh in total victories by a men's NCAA Division I college coach, winning 816 games to date. Williams has taken his teams to nine Final Fours in his careers at Kansas and North Carolina. He is the only coach in NCAA history to have led two different programs to at least four Final Fours each[1] and the only basketball coach in NCAA history to have 350 or more victories at two NCAA Division 1 schools. He is also tenth all-time in the NCAA for winning percentage among men's college basketball coaches."

He is now 816-216 overall for a 79% winning percentage. Since coming to Chapel Hill 14 years ago:

398-115 overall for a 78% winning percentage
169-65 in ACC play for a 72% winning percentage

are you freakin" kiddin' me? JUst imagine if we'd won the '12 title. Regardless, the LOM's butt is so tight you couldn't drive a pin up it with a sledge hammer. And I love it. Because despite being one of the best W's and L's guys of all times, he's still a royal jerk, much like his mentor Bobby Knight. THe apple doesn't fall far from the tree, something dookies hate but can't deny.

A true story. I ran into a friend of mine at the local pool hall who is a diehard Dook fan. He said "I owe you twenty bucks". I had forgotten we had bet $20 on which team would advance the farthest in the NCAAT in the preseason. He actually had the class to say we deserved to win it all because we had to play a murderer's row of teams to win it all. I spent the $20 buying us beers and talking shit about UNC and Dook and making another bet next year. Just proves there are some good Dook fans in the world. BTW, we have the same bet next year.

Here's hoping you go back-to-back.

With all due respect to Coach Gut. Makes you wonder what would have happened if Roy took over with the 1997/1998 squad.

Arch, Here's some additional fun facts that you can remind your dook buddy of...

Since Roy returned to UNC:
NCAA titles: UNC 3 - dook 2
Final Fours: UNC 5 - dook 3
Elite 8s: UNC 3 - dook 1
#1 seeds: UNC 7 - dook 6
NCAA record: UNC 42-10 (81%); dook 30-12 (71%)
ACC regular season titles: UNC 8 - dook 3

Yeah, sure they might lead us head-to-head, but I'd rather look at the big picture and our overall success than measure us only by our results against the evil empire.

Oh, I almost forgot - dook does lead us in one NCAA tourney category...
First round exits: dook 4 - UNC 0
