Bacot is back

He is a warrior. One sprained ankle from carrying to us a national championship.

Obviously he'll make way more money off NIL than anywhere else.

Hopefully Hubert puts enough 3pt shooters around him to allow him to flourish.

I was about to say some smart ass thing about Bacot being in school for 10 years. He did one better. lol

I'm gonna say this about Armando Bacot. This kid is a Tar Heel ALL TIMER! From Day 1 he has bled Carolina Blue, tried to recruit people to the school via social media, and played with a ton of heart. Nothing but respect for this young man. I'd love to have him for 20 years if we could. Guys like him and Joel Berry are the type of players we need.

Can we let JB have a covid year too?

If you ever wondered how dumb some fans are, look no further than the thread on IC where some fans are claiming we'd be better off if Bacot left.

They think it was Bacot that was ruining our offense this year, and not the worst 3pt shooting in UNC history. It was the fault of the All American double double machine shooting 55% FG

Hopefully Washington can fill that void…a year in the weight room and conditioning will help him tremendously! He will be able to stretch the floor from the 5 spot if he develops..we haven’t had a lot of players develop lately so we shall see
Did not look ready this year and is injury prone. Given massive uncertainty about Shaver/High's ability, I'd add one more player who can play center. Either have the stretch 4 portal addition be a guy who can flex up or add a guy who's comfortable with ~10 minutes a game as a backup.

I agree if we can! I guess it depends on how many spots we have…I mean right now we have zero sf’s on the roster lol we need a stretch 4 or 2, and we need shooters…with Bacot back and Washington and I guess Shaver, center is further down the list IMO! Like you said hopefully one of the 4’s can play some 5

Also we have High! I forgot about him for a second…not sure he will be ready next year though

Yeah, a 3rd team NCAA All American was a problem for us last season, yeah, I would shut that nonsense down quick!

It's an understandable thought and something I posed to Sisk in the mailbag.

If Hubert wants a 5 out offense that cuts and has open lanes to the basket, does Bacot make that unfeasible? He is an anchoring presence with no mid range or 3p range. He clogs the middle up.

On the other hand though, does it matter right now? Do we even have the personnel necessary to run 5 out even if Bacot wasn't here?

Thus, interesting dilemma.

I don't think anyone on this board is more pro the 4 or 5 out offense than I am. I think it works and can be sustainable.

I personally think it's more important to have a big that's comfortable guarding on the perimeter, as opposed to being a viable 3-point threat on offense. Questionable if Bacot is that, but I think his skills help the team more than it hurts. I'll maintain that I think Bacot is more of a productive big than a dominant one.

But there's zero question that rebounding, specifically offensive rebounding is important in March. There usually comes a game where you need a timely offensive rebound whether you're winning or losing late. Heck in 2017 against Oregon, it sealed a game for us despite choking at the FT line.

TJD and Timme both said they are done with college ball.

If Edey and Tshiebwe both leave, Bacot is the top center in college basketball next season.

And there are UNC fans who don't want him back. WTF?

Mando made the decision awhile ago, if he wanted to pursue his pro prospects he would of went G league after his sophmore if not his freshman year. He would have been forced to work in the shadows to improve his next level skills, but he had some value then for the next leval to develop.

In college he can get away with his strength and be a force doing that, coupled with his massive NIL likeability and profitability it was a no brainer at this point.

He has turned his ankle a couple of times, championship game spotlight, and ACC tourny this year, but dude has been pretty durable. Injury prone? Big minutes has had 3 turned ankles.

Pretty sad when a 5* plays 5 years. Tells me that we arent developing talent to get to the NBA. This will hurt recruiting big time IMO.

Has more to do with the type of player Bacot is vs the style of play in the NBA. The back to the basket type player isn't valued that much anymore.

Yeah for the most part. It is true that Bacot hasn't gotten better since he was a sophomore though. he had a big leap after his freshman season, but his numbers since:

Bacot (soph): 21.8 points per 40, .631/.661 shooting percentages, 13.8 rebounds per 40, 1.6 blocks per 40, 1.2 steps per 40
Bacot (senior): 21.0 points per 40, .564/.665 shooting percentages, 13.7 rebounds per 40, 1.4 blocks per 40, 0.8 steals per 40

No discernable improvements.

Some guys don't have NBA games. The greatest player in our program's history was not much of an NBA player. Some guys just don't have that skillset. Has little to do with "player development". Some guys are just limited but can be very successful at the college level.

But I do agree that it hurts recruiting some.

What was there to improve on though? There wasn't really anything that could be improved on in those numbers because of his skill set. He was basically at his ceiling as a junior. About the only thing you could say he could have gotten better at would be to develop a 15 footer, but even then he's just not an NBA type of player. Happens all the time for big men in college.

Good points. But just to be clear, those are fine numbers (except FTs) and he's a fine college player who just needs more appropriate support around him and maybe somewhat fewer minutes per game to help stave off injuries.

If we were getting a guy like Armando from the portal, that would scream "home run!" and we'd be deliriously happy.

Good example of why I don't trust stats as much as many do, the numbers can be skewed in any direction you want. How many minutes you played and who you had giving you help on the court has changed since Bacot's soph season. That soph season Bacot had Brooks, Sharpe, and Kessler with him, he has not had that other than that soph season. Literally the kid has been on his own in the deep in the paint physical battles, he needs some physical help, he needs another battler in the paint, bacot needs a battle buddy!

With todays conditions, doubtful a guy like that comes to Chapel Hill. With Bacot coming back, any top tier transfers will more than likely not come.

This guy is persistent if nothing else!

Insane to think top tier players wouldn't come to a team with the recruits we have coming in and plenty of PT available!

Good try troll, but your "subtle" attempt to drive the conversation and drum up discontent will not work!

Bacot coming back is a testament to his love for the Family and will pay dividends! Hubs has one less hole and another strong recruiter in the fold. Having an established Big means if I am a big who doesn't want to be locked in the post, I see a chance. If I am a post player, I see a buddy who will ensure I am not the focus of the D! Both scenarios increase our likelihood of success in the portal!
