I'd actually like to see that myself. Puff was actually somewhat of a bright spot, and Trimble. I'd also like to see how Nance would approach the 5/stretch 5 especially with his passing and actions after the catch. Bacot has been incredibly clueless for stretches and with his experience those fundamental mistakes should NOT be happening. jmo
Al, a LOT of folks will not like me saying this, I really don't care, I believe that Trimble is the best suited candidate to run the point for us THIS season (can you hear the heads exploding reading this
). BOTH RJ and Caleb are 2 guards, their mindset is to look for their own ops to score, both volume shooters before getting to UNC and remain volume shooters now, 2 guard mindsets. Neither are solid defenders for their position thou I do believe both have the ability to be really solid defenders. Scorers tend to not be great defenders because they do not see defending nearly as important as scoring.
There is not a better ball handler on this team than Trimble, speed with the dribble and ability to beat double teams with the dribble in tact, plays with his head up finding his players before going across half court, does not look for the more flashy pass, looks for the solid pass, very ball strong. Of course we all know he is an amazing athlete but he meshes skill with that innate ability. He is not just a good passer but a willing passer and that is a refreshing change from what we see in our starting back court. On the defensive end, where he is picking up the opposing PG he is second to only leaky as a position defender. I wish he were not called for so many tic tac fouls on the body but he is going to have to learn that he can not body a dribbler up when he makes his turn.
You may ask, I look at the box scores, he is not putting up big time numbers, if he is the best suited for the PG role why is he not getting more in the box score? It is because when Trimble is in the game the ball rarely goes thru him, it is still either RJ or Caleb that dominate the ball, he is in a 2 guard role while other 2 guards play the point. Combine that with the fact he is playing behind the starting UNC bask court that played in the national title game last season you see his ops are limited, that he has to follow their lead rather than they following his and Hubert controls the PT. He is not a great jump shooter, he is a decent jump shooter, shoots well enough that defense have to respect his shot but his next development step does need to be to work on his jumper. But the kid needs to be on the court more, he makes good things happen, late in one of those OTs vs Bama for example, he is put in and immediately gets a steal from EFFORT! You need guys that bring the sell out effort for every second they are in the game, guys like Trimble, Puff, and Leaky. Guys that do not need to see their shot dropping for them to work hard on the defensive end.
Nance, let me speak to that before I end this. Nance to me is a guy able to hit some treys but I do not want to see him camping out 35ft from the basket. I want him to more rotate out ball side and see if a defender follows him, if he doesn't swing it to him for the shot. But if the shot is not there or a passing lane to him I want him to cut back down thru the paint, set a solid screen, rotate Bacot high post, spring nance off the screen and have him set deep position within a passing lane. That is far different than holding your 2 bigs inside the paint together like Roy wanted, clogs the lane resulting in fewer driving lanes or passes to bigs, rotate them in and out of the paint and force the defender to follow or take the open shot. Screen for the screener, constant player movement allows for good ball movement and creates lanes for easy finishes, we take entirely to many hard finish ops. I don't want to see Bacot catching the ball at the top of the key, putting it on the floor, and twisting & turning for the finish attempt, that is way to much for him to do without picking up a charge call or losing the ball.
