I haven't been looking forward to football season THIS MUCH in about 20 years!
The Butch hiring was the last time I was this excited about an upcoming season. Let's hope Mack's tenure goes a little better.
TBH, I was cautiously optimistic about BD's hiring. I knew he could coach but coming from da U concerned me. Unfortunately those concerns were validated.
The story coming in was that he cleaned up Miami and it appeared that was true from the outside. His biggest mistake was hiring black Santa.
Butch did clean up Miami. And by far his worst mistake was hiring John Blake.
On TOS., I warned about Blake from the get-go, because he was a long and all favorite pet of Barry Switzer, who was as dirty as a rat's nest deserted because a whole litter died in it. Switzer petted Blake as a player, and then arranged his coaching career. The whole time Blake was at OU, as assistant and HC, rumors of his being directly involved in cheating swirled around the region and among OU's foes. When Butch was elevated from Cowboys DL coach to DC, he got Blake hired as Cowboys DL coach - the rumor then was that the NCAA was ready to drop a bomb on Norman over Blake as dirty OU assistant.
Butch did not play for OU and Switzer - he played for Frank Broyles at Arkansas. Butch never coached at OU - in fact, his first college job was at Ok St, where he saw up close how dirty OU was under Switzer. So why did Butch rescue John Blake the dirty OU assistant and get him a great job with the Cowboys?
Family ties. Butch's dad had gotten to know Blake's parents, and Butch met John Blake when Blake was in 8th grade (I think). Butch always felt protective of Blake, always tried to give him good advice, and always offered a helping hand.
It is most interesting that when Butch got the Miami HC job, Blake stayed with the Cowboys. One rumor then was that Blake knew that Switzer was arranging for him to be OU HC within a year or two - and as that happened, I guess that Blake knew. But wouldn't a year as Miami DC be better for your resume to get the OU HC job than another year as Cowboys DL coach? YES
The other rumor is that Miami President Tad Foote demanded that Butch have no assistants with any hint of corruption and did not want Blake in Miami while Butch was cleaning up. I think that rumor is also true.
But that seemed only to make Butch feel more pity for Blake. And he bought all Blake's lies. And UNC paid a huge price.
While I agree that you are correct on both counts, I still had reservations about anyone associated with Miami. I don't dislike Butch (and still pulled for the Heels)*, but I just always felt uneasy about his hiring.
*now, if UNC had ever hired that douche-nozzle spurrier, I would have disassociated myself from the Heels until he was gone.

I’ve listened to this a half dozen times. And every time I get excited about the season and the future of our football program.
Now that is the right attitude about UNC football: you get especially excited because you have reason to believe you will see some smart, tough defense that can win games.
