What do you think about this. Let's say he averages around 12 ppg and 5 apg and lead the Heels to the ACC title and far in march madness.

12 and 5 isn't really that much different from his (roughly) 13 and 4 this year, and he did lead the Heels to the ACC title and as far as they could go in March Madness. He wasn't on any of the All-ACC teams or even get honorable mention with those numbers, so I'd say he needs to have significantly better numbers in order to be in the ACC POY conversation.

He'll be relied on more this year, and I think he has the ability to put up better numbers than last year - so we shall see.

I think he will be in consideration for ACC POY and for the Cousey! I also think he will average higher on both stats. We will need him to score more than last year and assist more to make up for MP's assists. I do think TP will help make up for the assists and JJ will help with scoring load; but JB will be the clear leader of the team and he will need to perform at a high level!

I predict 15-17 and 8.

You mean the ACCPOY has not already been given to a dukie?

Seriously, I can see him as a great candidate for 1st team ACC but I am not betting ACCPOY...

As others said, the ppg will be higher and would of course need to be considered. ACC-POY could be a lotta folks, but you can count on JB being pre-season All-ACC and getting mentions on All-American and watch lists. The rest will hafta play out.

A certain Duke 2 guard will probably TRIP his way to ACC player of the year unless of course someone after being tripped by him gets up and smacks him in the mouth then that player gets my vote for player and play of the year...

Honestly, it'll be interesting to see what shakes out over there. Much as I hate it, they brought in a couple of guys in Tatum and Jackson who can flat play --- question is will there be enough balls to go around? Allen's never seen a dribble or a shot he won't take.

As for his tripping, maybe my favorite play of last season was when Allen tried to body-up on Berry to trip him and JB just shoulder-shrugged him and sent him about 3 feet in the other direction and kept dribbling without missing a stride :D.

Carolina has several guys who could be in the running. Justin is one clear possibility. He isn't that far from having that kind of year. This is more of a PG-focused system, so Joel is probably in a better position to earn the award. We have other guys who could have a shot if they have breakout years: Isaiah, Kennedy, Theo. But they aren't as close as Justin or Joel.

What players on other teams would you expect to see in the running? Like it or not, Duke has some candidates. But what about the other teams?

Apparently Okafor was the only freshman to ever win this award. So it probably won't be a freshman. If it is, it will probably be Giles. Or maybe Dennis Smith or Tatum. But with Giles and Smith coming off injuries, I wouldn't put my money on them.

Who else have you got?

JB, JJ, and Meeks should be on the preseason watch list as POY. JB has a really good shot at POY.16pts 7assist and winning the ACC regular season is the only way. Anything less and you can give the award to "trip a lot" over at Puke. K is about to make this guy look great with the pieces he will have.

I like JB game a lot. He is one of my favorite Point Guards to play at North Carolina. I feel he will have a banner Junior season.

I predict 15-17 and 8.

I will eat my hat if Berry averages 8 assists per game. No way. I love Berry. I really do. But he's not an elite passer plus we'll be counting on him to score a lot more. I think Theo is a better passer and might lead the team in apg if he's a starter. I'll go with 17 ppg and 4. I think that will be good enough for 1st team All-ACC. But I doubt Berry wins POY. Allen starts the year in the pole position for that but with all the new talent there, his numbers might drop significantly. They should if duke wants to be as good as they can be.

All I know is I wouldn't trade Berry for any PG in the country..I believe that

Neither would I. I'm expecting a big year from Berry. We all are. And he'll need to perform well for us to realize our full potential. I just hope the pressure of having to do most of the heavy lifting doesn't break him. But he seems like a tough kid (physically and mentally) so I suspect he'll be alright.

Meeks chances are slim and none and slim left town.

Be prepared to dine on sauteed hat, Sir!

If JB gets above 5 and TP gets 5-7 a game, I will lose this fight with a grin! (especially since I know he will get the points!)

Heels win either way!

I doubt you'll have to do any hat-eating, but it's NOT because JB isn't an excellent passer --- he is (and our Bigs will testify to that). But 8 is a gaudy number and you're right, JB will likely be busier as a scoring PG this season.

So his minutes increase even more; you guys think TP will not start; we lose MP's assists; JJ is willing, but not gifted at passing; and you don't think JB will not drastically increase his assists? His scoring will be important, but only if it opens up opportunities in the post and open looks from the wings! I say, if he doesn't see an assist bump, we are in trouble! 8 might be a bit high, but expect a significant increase.

Berry isn't a passer like Butter was, but he's a playmaker.
I agree with those who think Theo's assists will go up, Justin may get a bump too, they've both got good vision and are unselfish, but mainly they'll improve because of Berry, and what I said on the other thread:
Berry makes the pass that leads to the assist.

Oh yeah, and pre-empting Gary:
Last season Berry made a lot of very good passes which lead to the fumble/miss/rebound/put-back, etc. meaning he had a good 1-2 unnecessary blown assists per game.

Oz, that number is actually low. There were several games with more than 5. Now of course everyone gets their assists blown from time to time but some games it got downright absurd last season.

I see Berry averaging around 15 and 6..the thing I like the most is his intensity and defensive presence. The dude is plain and simple just a warrior.

I think Berry is a steady hand at PG and his leadership and knowing when to take over in spurts will be key. If Jackson and Meeks come to play next season Berry would be wise to just dish to them and hit his open jump shot.

Does Berry have the ability to be a POY I believe so, but if this team is going to click he just needs to be the leader. Low turnovers and putting his guys in spots to score.

My prediction like it matters is 2nd team ACC. ACC has some really good players returning and coming in.
