living in cola sc, i don’t expect to fight a crowd to see this film for many reasons...however, i’ve been waiting to see this like i wait to see star wars episodes.

i’ve heard the reviews are great as far as the acting...hoping the story is good, but with his life, who knows...what a great band, though.

I'll probably see it at some point, as it looks like a good movie. I just don't go to many movies anymore. I've gone from four movies a year, to three, to two, to probably only seeing Deadpool 2 this year, and I didn't even really like that movie.

Where is Cola, SC?

Yeah, hopefully since Brian and Roger were heavily involved, it will be true to Queen and Freddie’s story.
I hope so, too. I still think it will be a good film.

I saw a documentary about a month or so ago and it featured Mercury's last 5 years or so. The documentary had a sort of parallel dramatization with actors along with the commentators and other points of interest. The actor portraying Freddie was really good. He called almost everyone "Darling" when specking to them personally. I wish I could remember the documentary. It was very good.

I’d like to see that. Let me know if you recall.

I'll see if I can track it down.

I have read some reviews that the Bohemian Rhapsody film downplays Mercury's sexuality and apparently there's some uproar over that. I'm not really sure why it's necessary if the film is focusing on him and the band and their musical persona and accomplishments.

it’s ironic in a sense that sacha baron cohen was taken off the project “freddie” by brian and roger because they didn’t want his life portrayed in such a way on film.

cohen told stern they didn’t approve of his ideas for the character.

Yep. I heard some of those criticisms after the initial trailer was released. But while the focus is Freddie (of course), it is supposed to be a story of the band and their rise. I don’t think it’s necessary to make his sexuality the centerpiece of the story, when we all know already.

I heard he wanted the film timeline to end with Freddie dying and maybe even beyond. But I think I prefer that it ends on a high note... with the live aid performance.

I wonder if John Deacon was consulted? Roger Taylor looks like Anthony Hopkins now!
From what I've read, Deacon was greatly affected by Freddie's death and didn't want to continue playing. He has basically kept out of the limelight since. I think he only played with the band once or twice since (during the Freddie tribute thing, and maybe on one song where they already had Mercury's vocal track).

However, he is apparently still involved in the financial decisions of the band. And I think he was approving of the movie.

Ahh, okay. I didn't know that. Thanks for sharing.

Deacon is a great bassist. I know that Another One Bites The Dust was one of Deacon's more notable Queen songs. You're My Best Friend is another.

He also wrote Spread Your Wings, and a couple others that were pretty popular (just can’t recall). And of course, the opening bass line to Under Pressure.

Another good documentary is Queen: Days of our Lives. It’s probably on YouTube but I subscribed to qwello awhile back and watched it there, along with a handful of Queen concerts.

I dunno if you ever saw Observe And Report, with Seth Rogen. "It's Late" was featured prominently in that film. Funny as hell and a great song.

You guys are talking true Queen now with those songs! Queen, Queen 2, Sheer Heart Attack and News of the World were all great.
Don't forget A Day at the Races and Night at the Opera. Between my brother and I we had all Queen's albums up until the last few. Most of them were either really good to great.

No doubt. A Day at the Races is my favorite Queen album. I guess I assumed those two were a given. Kind of like Dark Side and The Wall from Floyd.

Queen's early stuff was hands down their best imo. It was amazing how quickly they released albums in the 70's.

Ok, finally got to see it and it was pretty much what I expected... a really good movie about a band that is one of my favorites. I’d give it a solid 8 out of 10. My wife and son enjoyed it as well, and they weren’t huge Queen fans coming in (but they are bigger fans now)!

I won’t give you the @heelz2345 detailed review but I will say I thought the casting was great in regards to the band members, especially Freddie and Brian.

Of course, there were tons of great songs. I could nit-pick a little bit - @strummingram - and say that a few of the songs weren’t really in the right sequence time-wise. And they had to cram so much of the band and Freddie’s story into a 2 hour movie that a few liberties were taken for dramatic effect, but overall I think it was pretty true to actual events.

Rami Malek was really good as Freddie and the closing Live Aid sequence was spot on.
Watch this before you go, and be amazed at how well they recreated this performance.

I would largely agree with most of this. Rami Malek was awesome as Freddie. I expect him to get a Best Actor nomination. The Live Aid sequence was one of the coolest things I've seen in a movie in recent memory; I really felt like I was at the concert. I'm glad I rewatched that concert before seeing the movie because it really resonated seeing it on the big screen. You are right that they took a handful of liberties, and that is to be expected, but I still enjoyed myself quite a bit when watching it. Plus the music makes it worth while

Just got back from the theater.

I give it an 8 out of 10. The Freddie actor looked more like Mick Jagger. The guy who played Brian May could be his clone. That guy WAS Brian May! They nailed all the details of equipment.

The ending was stellar.

But, I saw the preview trailer for this film which I want to see even more.

whoa

I saw it twice, the 2nd time to confirm to myself that WAS Mike Myers!
Missed him the first time, somebody told me who he played in the movie.
Very good movie, up there with Coal Miner's Daughter and The Buddy Holley(?) Story, in quality.
Does anybody know was Malek doing any of the singing, or was it Memorex? (anybody get that reference?)

I heard he sings a few bits; maybe the stuff on the lower end? But I believe they used some of Freddie's vocals, as well as this dude named Marc Martel (youtube him; his voice is pretty darn close to Mercury).
