Brady Dunlap Gets UNC Offer, Planning A Visit In Next Few Weeks

6'7" pure shooter at SF sounds like a good pickup to me. I'd like to see some video first, but I like how active we are!

I'm sure if there is video out there it will show that he NEVER misses a shot. That's just the way these infomercials are made.

1. He plays at one of the best HS programs in America.
2. He plays against great competition.
3. He has a great attitude about being a team player and hard work.
4. He has to get in the weight room but most HS kids need that.
5. He looks better than Nickel at the same stage.

He looks better than nickel? How does that look, exactly? I guess being the all-time scoring leader in the state of Virginia doesn't mean very much these days.

I want this kid even more after the video! He said he would.work his tail off for his teammate and his coach!

He's off his rocker. He in no way looks better than Nickel did a year ago in his videos. Dunlap looks like he would get pushed around in practice by our walk-on forwards.

I haven't seen Dunlap play. Seeing highlight videos are biased. They're not going to have videos of his mistakes.

But, we DO know Nickel is the all-time leading scorer in VA high school basketball history. I dunno if that was a fluke, but... I doubt it. And, I believe Nickel was a Hubert Davis recruit. And, the kid bails after just one season? To me, that's not a good look.

Nickel, Shaver,McKoy, and Garcia were all Hubert recruits as head coach.

I agree that it is not a good look, but it is also the nature of the beast now. Kids leave for any number of reasons from PT to personality conflicts to someone offered me more money. I assume it was based on honest conversations that let him know he wasn't the first option as the starter. Without any facts to the contrary, I am inclined to think positively about our coaches and their adherence to the Carolina Way. Unfortunately, trends in this new world indicate that this will become the norm!

They arent clones of each other. Similar rankings. Similar size. Brady more of a shooter, Nickel more of a scorer.

Expectations of role may be a big difference (may since we don't know if Brady will commit). Nickel was the star and only player on his HS team. Maybe he didnt like being an ancillary piece.

Brady played on a super high profile team with bigger stars. Maybe he sees himself as a fourth option on a really strong college team as well.

It will be if you park guys on the bench, ala Kay.
It won't be if you treat guys the way Dean Smith and Roy Williams treated them.
I prefer the latter and I would bet 99.9% UNC fans and alumni would as well.

OK, so this is really confusing? Last I heard UNC Fans universally realized how badly this team needs an injection of shooters that make shots. Now we have an offer out to a 6'7.5" 2 guard that is a knock down jump shooter and he is being down graded, shade thrown because he is not an amazing athlete?

I mean you look at the portal and big time programs are reaching out to guys that were 3 stars before they got to college that still can't shoot? I still recall the infamous words "If Luke Maye EVER starts a game for us we are in trouble", do you remember? A line that I have enjoyed David Sisk say several times about recruiting, you don't look at the kid as he is today, you look to what he may be 2years from now. What I see, in a VERY VERY LIMITED look, the type of look I really do not trust (highlite clips) is a kid that really needs to physically mature, I don't like his feet from the clips, and I suspect he is not ever going to wow with athletic play. But I as well suspect that if he does come to us he would be in the pecking order the last scholly guy on the bench, meaning scholarship #13 on a limit of 13 that can be given. Remind me again the last time a UNC team went 13 deep for any PT that mattered? So why not take a flyer on him and see how he develops, what is the worst that can happen, he enters the portal at some point, Will Shaver anyone? LOL

If the last two years are any indication, you better be in the top 7-8 if you expect Hubert Davis to allow you to get off the bench. And even those players 6-8 get inconsistent minutes.

So why worry about scholly #13, right? LOL

I do sincerely hope that when Hubert did his own evaluation one glaring issue that he must resolve is how he uses his bench. Not just see it as a problem, say publicly it was a problem, yet nothing changes (saw to much of that last season being honest). Will he really change this and not just continue to give it lip service? It will not take long to see it come next season, so I am waiting to see.

I want to see big time changes in the way we play next season, not even about wins and losses as much as I want to see a team that looks like they have been coached, where we don't see coaching mistakes that middle school coaches don't even make. Seriously, how many middle school coaches would take their worst jump shooter and put him out beyond the 3pt arch and expect him to shoot you victory?

I expect bench usage requires a measure of trust in addition to a simple desire to develop players. If I give peeps a plan of action that will lead to more PT and they refuse or are unable to show any progress, then I do a disservice to the team to play them! I must take a chance on losing to ensure there is accountability in practice! I must also consider that if I can't play my bench players due to this lack of trust and others on the bench are injured or coming off injuries, my bench becomes even shorter than I want. This is a perfectly sound analysis of what happened with Caleb and the bench. I have seen Hubs as a player work on his limitations so hard that he became a valuable piece of a winning pro team, even though he started as a marginal player that wasn't deemed worthy of a scholly. Why would this person lose the ability to reflect and work on weaknesses?

Dunlap is a shooter that needs to work on other areas of his game. This is the type of player that is perfect for our needs. He can provide a + skill in spots; provide continuity as he grows; and can develop into a leadership role in a few years! And DES and Roy would have to change some of the things the often did in this new world!

He won't visit until the end of April. Is Hubbie slow playing him (hoping to get better player) or is he slow playing the Hubster (UNC not being particularly attractive to him right now)?

No reason to believe UNC isn't attractive to recruits! There are plenty of reasons to believe peeps want to take their time since they obviously regret their first college choice! Another way to describe slow playing is I'm doing due diligence this time and weighing ALL options!

Our needs are immediate impact players for next season, including 3 starting caliber players.

Dunlap is a guy who will need years of development to become ready to play in the ACC. So no, he is most certainly not perfect for our needs.

Which came first, the chicken or the egg? IN basketball terms, which came first the freshman player that comes in with a singular skill that sets him apart from others or the developed player that still uses that special skill but has worked to improve his weaknesses. Had Dean Smith been like so many I have read making comments about this kid, Hubert Davis would have NEVER played for UNC. Dean did not think Hubert could play at the ACC level but Dean gave Hubert a chance.

I look at Buzellis and he looks really funny, looks anything but a serious college player that any big time coach would want but show me a coach that would NOT LOVE TO HAVE THAT KID! Now I am not saying this kid is Buzellis at all, I am just saying that a lot of the opinions I have seen floated I think are more about the kid looking odd for a real player. Yet as odd as he may look this 4 star kid is 6'7.5" and plays the 2 (thou I would move him to the 3) and just happens to be one of the best jump shooters in his class. And because he does not pass the look test on what, 2 clips that have been going around (where come to find out he was playing on a badly sprained ankle so I guess he did run a little oddly) folks already know all they need to know about him and that being that he does not even deserve to be given the chance to be our 13th guy on the bench on scholly? Don't forget that the argument folks constantly made about Nichel, playing in a really poor league does not apply to this kid. So you telling me this kid would be 1 of the worst scholly offers ever, a kid that developed in to a 4 star and that plays in a very hard league? Naz was a MUCH worse offer!

Nichel, before last season started, he had a large section of UNC fans down grading him, sharing that he should red shirt because he played in such lesser competition in high school, I am sure everyone recalls that, I sure do because I argued against that notion. Now strange how everyone seems to feel so much pain at his entering the portal? Now this Dunlap is getting that same treatment from a very vocal few, do we just not learn anything from the past?

Taking the wait and see approach on this, there are pro's an con's on each player. Nickel will be able to show what he can accomplish in the ACC at VT next year, and Dunlap has not even committed yet. Some felt that Nickel would have been a good to decent player at Carolina, the verdict is still out on that as reference above.
