A lot of people may forget that he got the Notre Dame job because Doherty left for UNC.
I think just age, retirement time. He is 63, been at ND alone for 23 years. Their winningness coach all time. Time to "pass the torch" type thing.
You are going to see more of this IMO. Guys that have been around 20-25 years don’t wanna deal with the headaches of the NILs and youth in todays society.
Roy, K, Jay Wright. I realize Brey isn’t in that same tier but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Boeheim, Huggins and Izzo amongst others bounce sooner than later.

Yeah, who wants to deal with NIL, the Stargate, and spoiled recruits with helicopter 🚁 parents? Don’t be surprised if Cal retires as well.
NIL, transfer portal, reclassifications, one and done - nowadays you probably spend 80% of the time being a GM and only 20% coaching. It's gotta suck if you fell in love with teaching the X's and O's and watching kids develop over time.
How much of that do head coaches handle? Couldn't they hire someone to deal with most of that, so the coach can mostly coach?
I mean obviously those things are important these days, but I think it would be rare to find someone who's good at those and also a top coach in games and practice.
Until he sent in a goon to try to beat up Bacot, Brey was on my shortlist of coaches I respect! I guess the times are wearing him down because that tactic seems beneath him IMO. On the one hand, I loved watching him try to beat his supposed "mentor" and on the other I was very angry that he would risk injury to an opponent just to win a game!

I'd be shocked if Cal walks away from all that money he is owed. It's not like paying players, transfers, and helicopter parents are anything new for him at UK.
Highly under rated coach, was not a great recruiter but his teams were always well coached and played hard, lot of respect for the job he has done at ND.
Brey is the only limb on the Krazywhiskey coaching tree, the rest are mere twigs.
Exactly. Cal is just getting used to part of his long time cheating being legal so that his foe's now do it too.

I don’t think Father Time got Brey. I think it is the current state of college athletics. Brey has been in it long enough to be independently wealthy, so he can call his own shot. Brey was good at building a team. ND would be pedestrian for a year, or two, and then be a problem as they got experience. That era has now passed with the portal. Anybody that feels jilted in the slightest way can just up and leave anytime they want. Like Wright at Villanova, and some say Roy and K, a lot of coaches just don’t care to deal with NIL and having to start over every year because of the portal. Figure Brey just decided he had had enough
