...and my apologies for not posting this sooner --- got caught up in other things and it slipped my mind.

- I meant to post this a while back and forgot, then Theo alluded to it in passing in an interview the other day and it reminded me... Anyway, most of y'all probably saw the video of this year's alum v currents games from Roy's camp, and of course it was damned impressive that the currents beat the alums twice. Well, the second game in particular got a bit heated at times, and although everyone is on their best behavior in front of the campers, I was told some of the physicality carried over in subsequent games, in particular between Hansbrough and Berry. Y'all saw how Psycho was knocking around the young Bigs (no surprise), and apparently JB took exception to some of his physical play and made a point of driving right into Tyler's chest and scoring a runner on him (like he did to Kentucky's big guys), and a hard foul or two ensued --- anyway, that back-and-forth continued in a subsequent game to the point of some intense jawing that had our freshmen's eyes getting all big thinking the two superstars were gonna throw fists. The kids didn't realize how heated things can get on the court even amongst family. Here's the kicker --- traditionally as the summer wears on and alums show up more sporadically, the pick-up games aren't currents vs alums anymore, they just pick teams and mix and match --- well, then Joel and Tyler decided they were gonna stack it so they could play on the same team (#respect). Hah! Talk about unfair --- a big ol' mean dog and a little nasty dog --- hell, playing winner-stays how would you ever get a team with those two off the court?

- I mentioned this in another thread, but Platek has been turning heads in pick-up and practice --- "he looks and acts like he belongs" (I'll say it straight-up: That does not surprise me one bit).

- A bit more on Luke: Apparently he's gotten pretty confident in his shot --- "sometimes it looks like he's doing a Larry Bird imitation out there" --- and that confidence is manifesting in a quicker release. And speaking of Theo's interview, his take on it was: "I tell people all the time, 'Y'all are really sleeping on Luke... and we're glad you are'."

- Finally, with summer classes over and maintenance on the Smith Center afoot, this is traditionally the time when a lot of the guys play in pro-am leagues. Some go home, some stick around, but they're usually playing somewhere. Last summer Meeks, Luke, KW and 7th played on a team with PJ and a couple of his NBA buddies. My main source for this stuff played on PJ's team and plans to again before he goes to Europe. If any of our guys play I'll report what I can.

Thanks Gary, always appreciate any info during the looooooong off-season.
Love the bit about Psycho T and JB... two peas in a pod there.

Those two on the same team is just plain unfair! I would lodge a protest with the bball gods and make sure my insurance was up to date b4 taking the court! Now the freshmen know who their leader is and what he is made of! Watching film and seeing it up close are two different things entirely. The more I watch Platek, the more I appreciate the little things he does to help the team. He is much more than a shooter, but much of what he contributes will be missed by casual fans. LM will be a problem for opponents.

Good stuff, thanks gary. Some of us may be pleasantly surprised at this version of Tar Heels Men's basketball. Not world beaters but competitive...let's see how they look Nov/Dec.

Kendall Marshall was in Chapel Hill two weeks back. I'm guessing he was participating in these games as well? He was definitely in town on July 20th.

They definitely have, as Theo puts it, a big ol' "chip" on their shoulders.

Joel Berry could win 10 ACC games by himself ..he may be the best Carolina PG of all time after this year! That ain't stretching it either .
Well, one benefit of being a UNC fan is that it's hard to go wrong picking a favorite at good ol' Point Guard U...
I will say that JB has moved up to second on my personal list behind the GOAT, aka, Phil.

Amen to that! We have been truly blessed with a plethora of great point guards in the 55 years I've been following UNC. Joel has been a great one, love his competitive fire. I hope Francis will be the next great PG, or perhaps even Seventh. :D

Interesting article from B/R on UNC's point guards. I don't totally agree with the rankings but it's a good overall assessment.

Interesting, indeed.

Older article that doesn't include Kendall's 2nd year (and doesn't include JB or Marcus, of course). After 2 years Kendall had 581 assists - on track to completely obliterate Cota's record. I suspect he would have moved up a few spots on the list.

I'm hoping Seventh will come on strong this year, he will need to in order to get significant PT in a very crowded backcourt.
I'm sort of expecting it. That frosh-to-soph leap that you hear about so often (with justification). Some players make their big jump between soph and junior years, though.

While I expect 7th to show big gains, it may not be until Berry is gone before he really gets to show how good he is. And hen he'll be competing with Jalek (as a soph) and Coby - along with Kenny and Brandon and Andrew and Leaky.

I hope - for his sake as well as ours - that he does show that big leap this season.

Last year I saw 7th working hard and improving a good bit. But I also saw him looking demoralized at times. That's what worries me about him if he doesn't convincingly turn the corner this season. If it doesn't click for him this year or if he gets pushed down the bench by Jalek, that could be bad news for 7th.

I never saw what I would classify as a "demoralized" look on 7th's face. I just think he isn't one of those smiley, happy-go-lucky types. His look told me he was focused and a little disappointed in himself. It told me that he takes the game seriously and is determined to find his niche!

Phil Ford is the greatest UNC PG and will most likely always be! He is tied to the legend of DES and instrumental in making Dean's innovations work! Love me some Nasty Dog, and he has elevated himself to the top 5 in UNC history to me. (he could reach #2 with another Natty!0 This is some list to be on, so this is an extreme compliment!

How do you measure the greatness of a point guard?
That my friend is the key question. It is way more than just numbers, especially Assist #s. Folks get blinded to the fact that PGs have the unique ability to pad their own numbers there and many do by monopolizing the ball. For every Cota or Butter unfortunately there's a Drew.

The number one criteria for a succesful UNC PG is floor generalship. You can be a scorer, or a passing savant, or anything in between if you are willing and able to space the floor, move the defense and get the ball to the right places to make the machine hum... and of course defend (individually and team-wise). Our current guy has few if any peers when it comes to this a priori criterion.

#CaptainDog... or should I say #GeneralDog

I'd actually argue that Kendall's numbers overstated his impact. He was a sublime passer, but he had to have the ball in his hands to be impactful, which in some ways limited the offense. Berry is more useful without the ball.

Though in Kendall's defense, that team kinda lacked ball-handling in the starting lineup.

I wouldn't degrade Butter's efficacy at all. That was a team that needed a facilitator --- as you said, more than most --- and he made the team way better (as opposed to padding his stats). Just look at the night-and-day difference when Butter replaced Drew as a freshman. Saved us from returning to the damned NIT.

We all have our favorites. Mine is Cota but I have great respect for all the guys on that list. And Berry belongs pretty high on said list.
Ed was definitely fun to watch with those sick finishers. 3/4 court alley-pops could happen anytime. Never really got a good shot in the NBA but I would've loved to have seen it

I think in terms of overall talent, Ty Lawson was the best I've ever seen. But I'm only in my twenties so I missed out on a few such as Phil Ford, Ed Cota, and Kenny Smith. I will say, in terms of heart, Joel might be the most intense.

Just read today that Matthew Hurt is trying to plan his unofficial visit to campus. Really like him a lot, he's super versatile and would really make us successful.
Anyone hearing anything new on him?

Hurt is a monster and Roy let him know he was a priority... but conventional wisdom is he follows his bro to Minnesota or (for whatever convoluted reason) ends up at Louisville. All I can tell you is what I was told, i.e., that Roy has not cashed this one in just yet.

Are we favorites? Prolly not. But then again... with Ol Roy ya never say never...

Not gary but from what I hear the kid has been busting his butt this off season, just working to get better. Roy sat him down after the season and from what I hear it made a huge difference in his confidence level, Joel has been working with him as well and shared how his freshman season went, really hit home with 7th. I am tellin ya now, don't under estimate this kid, he has a burning desire to become as good as his ability will allow and he loves to take on big time challenges. Kenny and Luke surprised folks with how much improved they were from frosh to soph seasons, I strongly believe you will see a similar uptick in the games of 7th and BRob.

What I heard earlier was that he looked really good running beside JB in pick-up off the ball.

I truly believe that if he is relieved of his PG responsibilities (which are considerable) he can thrive. He'll then be able to slash with impunity, crash the offensive glass and utilize some of that freaky athletic ability.

Gary, great report.

For the record, a few weeks back I already gave Luke the nickname "The Bird" a few weeks ago in one thread..:)
