...and what if they made biscuits and no one was there to eat em? That might've been the only thing that kept us from scoring 100, but hey, why be wasteful? :)

Seriously though, I honestly felt bad for Mack, as his guys were obviously rusty from not having played, and it really showed in their lack of "shooting legs" as they were uncharacteristically brick-laying. That being said, that does nothing to take away from (easily) our best offensive execution in at least 2 years,

- It's always a good sign when I can tell what we've been working on in practice --- Big-to-Big action, baby!. Granted, it took a minute --- the first time Bacot got the ball on the block, he missed seeing a WIDE-open Brooks backside. Fortunately, we didn't miss many more of those. and y'see it's a team thing --- solid posting, sure cuts, decisive passes --- and buddy, that was some vintage Dean Smith Carolina T-Game basketball right there tonight! We hit the backside block-to-block passes, the Hi-Lo entries, give-and-goes, you name it. Hell, at one point I coulda swore I saw visions of Mitch Kupchak pointing to Bobby Jones for the Assist.

- Our perimeter guys were feeding properly as well. I can almost bet we worked on bounce-passes to Bigs. Y'see, those are fine but ya just can't throw a pass at the Big's ankles.,. the rule of thumb is the ball pass should BOUNCE up to knee height --- and it can be the difference between a basket and a TO. For those of you who notice such things, our guys were "sitting down" with the pass and the ball was coming up accordingly.

- speaking of Bigs, an underappreciated skill is cutting, and they did so tonight like they meant it. I can't remember how many times in practices I repeated the mantra "reward the big man!", meaning that if he works hard, get him the damned rock. Our bigguns worked there asses off tonight. That also includes running the floor, and they did that too. So yeah, we can still get better, but the passing, catching and finishing were all improved markedly.

- My friend @Tarheel75 and I have been harping all season about EFFORT and ENERGY, and for the first time in ages the first 5 came out like they meant it, instead of waiting for the bench to spark us, and the energy level was almost incessant throughout line changes. All game we were getting after loose balls, making the extra effort in defensive help, and getting tough rebounds. And if someone made a mistake?... they didn't sulk... and it felt like everyone had each others' backs. For example, when Caleb reverted to a first-day frosh and got his pocket picked consecutively, he bounced back and got right back into the flow.

- Speaking of all that --- and I'll readily apologize if it has sounded arrogant about it before--- but tonight illustrated what I've been preaching as to what this team potentially can be at its best --- an interchangeable 9-man rotation, that is quickly becoming 10 with big Kessler getting his legs under him. There is no one player who has to be on the floor for us to do what we do, and we have guys with complementary skills, strengths and experience levels. Literally everyone in that 10 contributed something valuable tonight in their own respective ways. Sharpe was in beast-mode and slowed things down for himself, but Mando and Garrison were solid as rocks, and Kessler more than made his presence felt. Caleb and RJ ran the show nicely. Leaky was quietly effective while Ant brought high energy, and Walton lit it up with 19 on 7/10 shooting while Plates put on as good a performance as you'll ever see for a guy who only took 1 shot, with 5 dimes, 3 boards, and yet another defensive clinic.

Bottom line guys? Yes they were rusty, but this is still a 20 point win even if they weren't.

Anyway, what's the mantra? PLAY HARD, PLAY SMART and PLAY TOGETHER. Check, check and check. Now... let's see if we can repeat that Weds when Wojo comes to town...

Yep. I think every rotation player had a good game. Really good to see. Hopefully we win vs Marquette and can start building a bit of comfort off the bubble.

Well said G, I'm comfortable with any of the 10 guys RW plays.
Our depth is getting better every game. This team will be a load in another 3 weeks.

Very nice write - up Gary as you covered most all of the bases on this game.
Of course, I have to bitch and moan once again about FT's, however, we would've won this one even if we had not made a single one of them.

Shout out to the frosh as they scored 39 of the 1st 48 points in this game, that stat only shows what this group is capable of in any given game. If they can improve on their consistency, then we've got us a potential juggernaut on offense. Walton's shooting is a wonder to behold huh? Also, I totally agree that the FOCUS & EFFORT were there and created the energy you referenced. Those 2 critical ingredients will get you a LOT more wins than losses.

I also would mention that L'ville had not played in 3 weeks and were down 2 players, so that should temper the enthusiasm...., but just a tiny little bit, as I also agree that with our guys playing as they did, it just would not have mattered if those guys come in full strength and ready to go, that team out there this evening would have put the beat down on a lot of teams that have better records than us.

If this team comes out Wednesday with the same types of FOCUS & EFFORT, then I would say we have taken a big step forward in our competitiveness and are starting to peak at just the right time and we can make a little or a lot of post season noise.

I really want to see us play that way in consecutive games. No let down, or overlooking. Great effort by all today and execution. Just my opinion, but I believe our best shooter is also possibly our best passer. And dang it he’s just gonna get better!

Roy's presser was nice, its that time when everyone is healthy and on the same page, "everything" they've worked on in practice is being executed up and down the roster. And something Roy said a number of times, this is a good team, they are enjoying playing and playing with each other. Coach did point out Leaky with a zero but had (I haven't ckd the box score) 8 rebounds and 7 assists or something, his point being the entire team is contributing to our successes in numbers of ways.

Good stuff gary and '75.

The Heels are rounding up nicely....working as a team.

Like a good wine, just took a while to mature.

the key factor enabling the heels to play as a team is love's improvement as a passer and play maker. when the point guard spots the open man it encourages others to do the same, i.e. leadership. still too many turnovers for caleb, but i'd rather he make too many passes than not enough. when he fixes the to's he'll be the complete guard we hoped for.

FINALLY !!!

Finally we blow a team out, Wed was a nice win but it was more workman like, vs the lville, it was domination from start to finish. It became more of a scrimmage/lesson taught affair with our payers giving the lessons. Now granted, lville not having played or really able to get in much for practice for the better part of a month was a HUGE factor, that was not the lville team that began this season. But this Tar Heel team needed a game like this, one where it all clicked, where we covered basically every aspect of the game properly, where we got a team in trouble and just stepped on their throats.

It was a bit of a Karmic repayment for our game with them last season, no one felt sorry for us with that game even thou we were depleted due to injuries so sorry if I do not pity them now. Other than that ugly spat of TOs early second half and free throws, it was wonderful to be able to watch the beauty of a UNC game when things click. That big to big passing, that amazing stoke Walton shows us, HUGE assist numbers! Maybe even more special was watching the reactions of the players, just the joy they seemed to be playing with, almost like so much of the bad that has happened over the last 2 seasons was to an extent exorcised, it was a release of joyful emotion that has been bottled up far to long.

The next step now is carrying forward that emotion and confidence and effort we saw yesterday, play to play, half by half, game by game. We have in the past got on a solid roll and positioned ourselves in a solid spot and all the sudden for some strange reason throw out a clunker as if we struggle to build on success, so that is something I am on the watch for hoping does not occur this time. I do think there is a higher level this team can get to this season, that this was not our A+ game but it is hard for me to not call this at least our A-.

Speaking of biscuits, Crighton Lebo can put the biscuit in the basket. He will hit a game winner for the Tar Heels as a junior or senior

I know he only plays in mop up duty minutes right now, but from the eye test, he seems very poised out there.

This isnt a good look for coach Mack. That is him and former Buffalo Bills center Eric Wood, who himself didnt do color commentary for the Bills on radio this past season due to covid. So yeah, Louisville and covid excuses, look at your coach.

Btw, thats after they got waxed by us last night.

Caleb's still somewhat up and down in his play from game to game, but his improvements are showing. The mention you make of the importance of PG play is also a very important factor, however it was not as much in this game. What made us play to the levels we witnessed in this game were that we created so much better spacing with movement by everyone, but particularly the big men, and we shot the ball so well (61%).

The team achieved what I had hoped that they would by creating a working margin and expanding it, while not allowing L'ville to get momentum and getting confidence that would allow them to make this game close or even competitive from about the 12 minute mark in the 1st half and continuing throughout the rest of this game. Great movement will always create opportunities to score and a lot of the time...,to score openly and easily as we saw on several occasions.

The 64 thousand dollar question is..., will it continue, and will it be consistent? I would venture to say that the increase in better movement off the ball by all who play will make both Caleb & RJ perform and look even better than what we saw in this game.

This type of win is the kind of performance for our younger players and to a lesser degree, the upperclassmen, that will be indelibly impressed upon them and will do so much to promote continued better play, and that is what I expect and hope for moving forward.

I agree that it's not a good look, but that video was shot almost two months ago. There's a Dolphins–Raiders game on in the background. They played one another the day after Christmas last year, which was the same day that Louisville beat UK, so this was a few hours after the Cards beat the 'Cats.

Oh, totally did not notice that. I just saw the date of the post. Thanks for the correction.

I finally had a chance to watch the entire game, (work/family conflicts been pretty hectic). My first reaction was "Damn!!" It's amazing how much better you look when you actually make those 2 footers, especially if the 3 ball has forced the defense to not pack things in. Offensive flow and movement looked very solid, with the interior passing of the bigs looking amazing - 7 assists from the 4 big guys is nice.

Also promising was defensive rotation several times when Heels went to double and EVERYBODY was able to scramble to find someone as Louisville tried quick passes to get an open look but could not. Not sure what has clicked with Kessler recently but I like it - hoping any rumors about him are untrue. He is doing so many little things correctly that he is producing positive minutes without even looking for a long ball. Love played a great game except for that 5 minute brain fart at start of second half.

I get that Louisville was rusty but rust isn't worth 45 points, 50 if UNC learns how to make the damn ft's. That offensive execution is what everyone has been looking for all season. The Heels concluded that 9 game stretch I posted about earlier with 5-2 record (2 postponements). Still only one quad 1 win so far but chances for a few more. Really glad Roy got Marquette scheduled, last thing they need is a week off right now. Would love to see UNC build on what was best game of the season so far, and I'm still pissed about the '77 title game.

Maybe it's just me but I like the way a couple times or more Love has just nearly ripped the rim off the board on breakout drives and dunks including at end of first half, where a Card gave him tepid obstruction.

Violent. With authority. Intimidating. Alpha Dog.

I know it still only counts two points, and maybe that mode leads him to missing a dunk eventually, or coming down wrong or hurting his hand on the rim....

but I like the fire it lights and hopefully shows by example to others on the team to throw it down when you have the chance. Don't get cute with throwing up some soft trick shot to bounce around the rim or maybe get blocked. Leave no doubt.
