The 6'9 former 4 star top 40 recruit is transferring from BYU after 1 year. Our GM was his aunts agent (Tamika Catchings) and Kanon is signed with our GMs former agency. With these connections, it's a name to watch IMO.

Kid has stretch 4 written all over him. Fluid, quick. But that FT% is troubling. Don't usually see consistently good outside shooters with crappy FT%. Not worried about his rebounding (yet), since he was on a team with a couple of superior rebounders.

He would be an awesome get! Hopefully, the visit goes well and we leverage the connections! He already has the intangibles and seems willing to be coached up to get the tangibles!

Close the deal, Hubs + Tanner!

Question he looks to be a pretty solid player so with the money they are throwing at other players Is it the same position that Dybantsa
Plays or does he just want a change in venues?

This UNC team simply cannot afford to wait and risk missing on a guy like Catchings and see Drake in the end stay in the draft. If we can get this kid we need to do just that and not dither. We did to much dither last portal and in the end did not fill our need areas, can not afford to do that again.

I am not getting in to the this one is better than that one stuff, that is no more than a opinion or who may have the most upside. It is a wasted effort if in the end we get neither. At 6'9" I like the high release Catchings has on his jumper and I feel much better with a 6'9" kid covering the 4 when he has to.

I also have to look at the mock drafts, Drake is hanging in that late first round spot, to the extent that it would seem like he must at very least go thru the NBA workouts. Even if Drake were to pull out of the draft in the end you are talking what mid to late summer while the better replacement options have committed elsewhere? To much on the line to take that risk.

He is way better than Powell on O. Also, 3 inches taller...a possible beast.
They are both freshmen and I haven't seen Catchings in full games, but I'll give good odds that Drake will be a star next season (if he's still in college). I really like what I've seen of Catchings, too, but I can't say if he'll be a star next year.

If I could only have one, I'd keep Drake. Easy decision. If I can have both, I'd be ecstatic.

I worry that the longer we don't hear from Drake, the less likely we'll have him next season. I hope that's wrong, and I hope we're doing everything we can to ensure his return.

Our team can easily find starter minutes for both Drake and Catchings.

It's a no-brainer to add Catchings if we can.

But that in no way means we shouldn't do everything we can to get Drake to return.

Here's how the minutes might work out, assuming the new guys can earn them.

PlayerSGSFPFTotal MPG
Drake(maybe a few)25-300-530
Catchings--10-1510-1525-30
Wilson--0-525-3025-30

You have to factor JPowell in to that as well, really solid 3 and D guy at the wing, he will absolutely get minutes.

Drake is interesting, you, as most seem to feel, Drake would explode as a player come next season of he stays in college. What I see is a kid that I think is well on the way to being a strong + defender, maybe one of the best in the ACC. I don't like his jump shot, has way to much arch on it and his shot prep is a touch slow and his release is a touch low. I think that means a lot of work needs to be done to get it consistent, right now he is a streaky jump shooter. I like Catchings jump shooting form much more, I see him as a 3/4 guy, I see Drake as a 3/2 guy. While Drake does and excellent job of covering a 4 for a wing guy he never should have started a game for us at the 4.

I agree.

As for JPowell, I see him splitting duty with Seth and maybe Denis at SG. Sure, he could fill in at SF, but if you have Drake and Catchings, the only reason you might do that is based on who has the hot hand at the moment, or whether you really need Drake's D. On average, Drake is our best SF, and Catchings might be our best backup SF.

Obviously if we can't hold onto Drake, JPowell and Catchings fill in as you suggest. Assuming we get Catchings, of course. I like our chances because of the prior connections, but will that be enough?

Nobody seems to be including Cade in these calculations. AJ has a nice video on that in a different thread. While AJ didn't raise this to my recollection, I wonder if the reason Cade hasn't announced anything is because he's waiting to see if there's a place for him here. If DPowell returns and we get Catchings, it's harder to see how he could fit, even if he turns the corner on his shooting. But if Drake leaves and we whiff on Catchings, I could see Cade staying here and working to revive his shooting. What do you think?

LOL, well you already know how I feel about Tyson, I am not looking to hammer the kid. I think he is better served by going to a smaller program, he can be a big fish in a smaller pond and have tons of stories to tell his grand kids.

I may be a bit higher on JPowell than some, he is as well a + defender but he as well brings a sweet touch from trey land and the huge thing is his decision to be at UNC next season has been made, Drake is still la mystery that may take time to figure out, time I am not sure we have. Keep in mind, I can always fit Wilson in at the 3 if I need to. The addition of Catchings to me means we are settled at the 3 and the 4 and no matter what Drake decides to do we are in good shape.

Should Catchings commit, be prepared that we’re getting him for 1 year only… no matter how he performs. He wants to be a focal point and get to the NBA pronto.

Plays junior HS year at his hometown school, then plays for Overtime Elite as senior (which is typically for fast tracking to NBA), then de-commits from Purdue (realizing his minutes/shots wouldn’t be what he wanted), chooses BYU (easier path to immediate minutes/shots with portal overhaul after Pope left), and now leaving there with AJ coming in (again, taking away from him being focal).

His main priority in coming here is for a higher level NBA audition. Should it not matriculate immediately next year, he’ll be on to somewhere else.

His talents are absolutely good enough to play here, and I know some are thinking that with the portal, it’s year to year anyways, and while you’re not wrong, I’m much more interested in bringing in transfers that will give us 2 years at least. One year rentals are fine, so long as winning matters to them most. I have concerns that may be 2nd for him. Gives off some possible Garcia vibes.

All this said, I’d happily eat crow if I ended up being wrong.

I have heard the speculation of this and my not knowing the kid or his thought process I can't really retort it one way or the other. I would think Tanner would have serious insight on this so I would be persuaded to default to his opinion on this one. Kid is coming in for a visit so Tanner seems well on board for him. I don't know why he committed to Perdue and then de-committed. We have had 2 guys commit to us and end up de-committing in the last 2-3yrs, 18yr old kids do a lot of things for different reasons.

Probably doesn’t help that I live about 20 minutes from his hometown and an hour from Purdue, so lot of the chatter I hear is coming from the two groups he left at the altar, haha.

I think his mother is very aware of the buisness of basketball with her experience. I have no problem with her son playing it year to year. I think he fits very well with the developing roster for next year in ChapelHill. Hoping to hear UNC got a yes for next year soon.

So . . . JPowell is a taller Kenny Williams?

Always remember to ask for 3 more wishes on your third one. ;)
Genie: You have 3 wishes. What's your first wish?

You: Three more wishes.

Genie: Sorry, that's against the rules. You can't ask for more wishes. You still have 3 wishes. What's your first wish?

You: Three more Genies.
