Losing Caleb is not what I consider to be good news but how again did Julie Andrews put it "anytime God closes a door some place he opens a window"? So I am going top look at the open window rather than the closed door for this post.
At least the kubuki dance with Caleb is over, no more free rein for Caleb from Hubert, I think it is VERY clear by now that MAJOR change is coming, major change had to come, par just could not be last season. At most now it could be an "Iron 2", I hope not but hopefully we have seen the last of Hubert's Iron Man slant, hopefully now he will be forced to develop his bench depth. This is pretty much a total tear down and he is bringing in a LOT of new faces so the culture of last season is gone, the we made it to the title game last season so we are just going to show up and have a different result in that last game, man that has to be a vague memory.
Last seasons results were set up by the last off season, the failure of this team to give what it takes to get better as individual players and as a over all team. Look for example at Bacot, he started the season not in great condition, took him several games to get his game conditioning back? You mean your candidate for NCAA POY was not on the best condition of his life, didn't work just that much harder to be just that much better as a 4th year senior? You had Bacot hanging with Oscar, taking in the Ky Derby, hanging out on TV sets ect, you had Caleb hanging out with Dame Leonard, you had guys working out with their own personal trainers and not getting together for those long and extended summer games in pick up vs alums. The focus was not on getting better as an individual player and as a team, that NIL meeting was more important to them? Last season points to what happens when the focus is not on improving. That was not just a UNC problem, it was there for all the major programs, look now who is left standing in the NCAAT, it ain't the blue bloods, it is the teams focused on winning, that focused on getting just that much better than they were before.
So clearly Hubert is making major player changes, I pray he will now do a much better job of understanding the talent he is brining in and play to their strengths rather than to their weaknesses. I think it has to start there, with Hubert gaining a strong understanding of all the players that will be on roster next season and arrange things so that they can produce from their individual areas of strength, if he does that things will look much better. The key is getting much more scoring from the 3 and 4, having a consistent scheme going in to the season that is tweeked for the players but stays constant thru the season, and not playing guys near 40mins a game and expect them to be there strong at the end.
