Why? They reached the Championship Game and returned 4 starters.
Because one of the starters was responsible for a LOT of the offensive points, chemistry, and maybe even leadership. That starting 5 needed all of those 5 to play the way they did.
It turned out that they were extremely over-hyped.
Gosh.
This team blew the largest half time lead in NCAA championship history and it has played poorly since.
A lot of embarrassing articles are going to come out if we don’t make the tournament.

Much much worse.
40 mins vs an entire season of underachievement. Not a single quality win.
Those 4 returning starters included the 3 on the team that were the highest ranked recruits. Good coaching would have captured that late run and crystallized that team play so that this season the team looked largely as it did in finishing in 2021-22.
This team was not over-hyped based on what it brought back from a team in the Championiship Game. This team has been under-coached, poorly coached.
Blaming the media is what you do when you refuse to hold coaching accountable.
The obvious results show that they were over hyped and their Title Or Bust rhetoric was more than they were able to meet. They don't have what it takes to meet that standard.
Hubert Davis is a new coach, still learning how to coach.
They never deserved the preseason number one. You know how I know that's true? Their record, performance and the eventual outcome proves that.
You're letting last March blind you to last year's performance. We were a bubble team with multiple issues for most of last year. We weren't your traditional runner up.
I know that. But when teams make a big turn around, it is the job of the coaches to make certain that it is maintained. When they fail to do so, they fail. The media is not responsible for that, nor are other coaches who alum that with the same talent, they would have done better.
Have you ever seen the documentary The Best That Never Was about RB Marcus Dupree? IT is a terribly sad story. he couldmhave been the best RB in CFB history, but those who handled him messed him up something awful. Scouts never overrated him; those who were in his rears and in charge of him set him top for some kind of fall.
Perhaps UNC should not have been rated #1 based on who was coming back, and competing to to all the other teams, But this UNC team should have been ranked Top 10, and I think not lower than 5. Davis and his staff have failed - period.
I would argue they never made a big turn. The issues were just covered up by getting hot at the right time. We won't find out what kind of coach Hubert really is until next year. These guys don't really work for his system. It's a square peg in a round hole.
