CAROLINA MEN’S GOLF TO HOST THE WILLIAMS CUP PRESENTED BY STITCH GOLF® TO HONOR ROY AND WANDA WILLIAMS
CHAPEL HILL – The University of North Carolina men’s golf team will host The Williams Cup presented by STITCH Golf® to honor former men’s basketball coach Roy Williams and his wife, Wanda, Oct. 25-26, 2021, at the Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington.
“We wanted to acknowledge in a special and memorable way Roy and Wanda’s generosity that has made an enormously positive impact on college athletics, the University of North Carolina and our golf program,” says Tar Heel head coach Andrew DiBitetto.
“As many people know, Roy and Wanda watch as many of our Carolina teams compete as their schedules allow and support our teams in many ways, but what most don’t know is he has been and continues to be a mentor to numerous Tar Heel coaches, including me. Beyond his passion for golf, the significant financial commitments the Williamses have made to fund scholarships for students are simply extraordinary.”
UNC will host the 10-team tournament, which also includes Georgia, Houston, Indiana, Iowa, Louisville, Michigan State, NC State, UNCW and Vanderbilt.
In March, the Williamses gave $1.5 million to the Carolina Covenant, $1 million to Carolina Athletics to endow a scholarship in men’s basketball and $500,000 to the Chancellor’s Science Scholars program. That followed a $600,000 gift to allow spring-sport student-athletes to play another year after Covid cut short their seasons in 2020. Overall, the Williamses donated more than $5.8 million to Carolina in the 18 years he was head coach of the Tar Heels.
“Coach Williams really cherishes the traditions of our game and is a tremendous supporter of amateur and collegiate golf,” says DiBitetto. “He’s spoken to the players at two U.S. Amateurs, tracks how our team is playing and is often the first to offer his congratulations after a tournament. The Williams Cup presented by STITCH Golf® will have special meaning not only to our players, but players on every team in the field.”
Eagle Point opened in 2000. The Tom Fazio-designed course is a nearly 7,300-yard trek through live oaks, sabal palms and the coastal waters of Wilmington. Golf Digest ranks Eagle Point one of America’s Top 100 courses. In 2017, Brian Harman won the PGA Tour’s Wells Fargo Championship at Eagle Point.
Carolina’s complete 2021-22 men’s golf schedule will be released on Thursday.
