CHAPEL HILL—North Carolina will tip off the 2015-16 basketball season by headlining the 2015 Veterans Classic, an annual showcase at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., that brings together top teams from across the country in celebration of Veterans Day. The Tar Heels will face Temple at 7 p.m. on Nov. 13, 2015, followed by Florida versus Navy at 9:30 p.m. Both games will be televised nationally by the CBS Sports Network.
In addition to the games, the three participating schools will have the rare opportunity to get a glimpse of what life is like as a midshipman at the Naval Academy. The visiting teams will be immersed in the culture and tradition of the Naval Academy, including touring the "Yard," watching noon meal formation, eating lunch with the Brigade at King Hall, as well as a number of other unique experiences, including military demonstrations and receptions. CBS Sports Network will provide a look at the schools’ visit to the Naval Academy on Hoops Confidential: Veterans Classic, a 30-minute all-access show.
“It’s a tremendous honor for Carolina Basketball to visit the Naval Academy and play in an event that pays tribute to the brave men and women who safeguard our country," UNC head coach Roy Williams says. "Four years ago we were privileged to play on an active aircraft carrier; we are again blessed with the opportunity to learn more about life at the Academy and also play a game against a quality team such as Temple. Our players, coaches and staff certainly will have an unforgettable experience.”
Carolina will be facing Temple for the first time since the NCAA Tournament East Regional final at The Meadowlands in East Rutherford, N.J. Carolina won that game, 75-72, on March 24, 1991, to advance to the Final Four in Indianapolis. The all-time series between the Tar Heels and Owls is tied, 3-3.
