I didn't see another thread on this.

I obviously don't need to state that I'm against this in a big way, and this is one of the more embarrassing things to ever happen to UNC basketball.

I am all for sportsmanship and respect, but this is way over the top IMO. IF the shoe was on the other foot there would damn sure be NO ceremony at that gothic dungeon in Derm

Honestly, have NO PROBLEM with this after the respect they showed Coach Smith in their place. jmhho

I am not in favor of this either. I think in light of the sexual assault allegations and possible
coverup by the dook program, this will not sit well with UNC fans. I am all for the mutual
respect aspect of this as each program needs each other to make this rivalry great.
It is a classy attempt to show respect, but if I was sitting in the stands tonight, I
would not even give a golf clap. I would just sit in silence while coach k is honored.

Yes there absolutely would be. Some of y'all need to grow the heck up.

I'm all for it. It's the classy and sportsmanlike thing to do. 1000 wins is incredible

^ This.

That said, I wish the days of intense rivalry were still here instead of all this PC crap. That year with Doherty and Felton's group vs Duke was how it should be every year. Intense rivalry.

I like it in lieu of their honoring of coach smith and k's words about him. With gameday here and the national exposure its a great opportunity to show some class and integrity. 1000 wins is an incredible achievement. Coach smith woulda been the first to shake his hand.

No big deal either way for me . . Coach K was the first to cross the 1000 win threshold and that requires consistency and longevity.

Speaking of honoring someone, I'd really like to see Desmond Hubert in uniform and part of the starting 5 tonight for senior night. Work it out with K that we call a timeout right after the tipoff and send in a replacement for Dez.

Great point

If they can find a way to honor a hypocrite they could also find a way to honor a kid like Dez

As much as a UNC fan that I am( even as a UF alum), I think the current leadership, especially in the athletics dept is beyond poor.[/B]

I have no problem at all, players and coaches don't hate each other like fans do.Yeah, they like to beat each other on the court have bragging rights but that's it.I think Jordan has proved that by having Dookies playing for the Hornets.Like others have mentioned,it was very classy what they did for Dean so we shouldn't complain honoring the all time wins leader.I doubt that record is ever broken by the time K retires.

Thought about that too! I don't even care if he goes out there in a suite, just want him to feel that honor.

I'm not a fan of this.

What the dookies did in Derm wasn't unprecedented. Pitt also honored DES before our game with them -- our first game since his passing -- and nobody else has done it since his public memorial (Miami, Georgia Tech). What Pitt and dook did seemed timely and appropriate.

dook has played five road games since K got his 1,000th win. Their very next game was against his protege at Notre Dame. Did the Irish honor K? Did any of the other teams? None of them did, so why should we?

I certainly respect the accomplishment, but cheering for it would make me feel dirty.

When I heard of this last night, it bothered me quite a bit. Today, I've backed off a bit. I still don't think its necessary, but also guess I don't have a problem if they don't make too big of a deal about it.

I don't think it would've happened had Duke not done the court prayer thing for DES.
Will any other school in the ACC do this? Did they? I could maybe see it more if K was retiring and this was his last ACC reg season game.
I think just putting something on the scoreboard screen video before the game and at halftime would've sufficed.

One thing is for sure, Roy is always going to be out in front in doing whatever he can to show the other team / coaches respect, etc. You see that in all his discussions and interaction with them and talking about them before and after games.

Obviously this is a good thing, but sometimes I think its a little overboard, where it can border on him having more accolades for other teams' players and coaches than his own. He shouldn't be have neutral (or even favoring the other teams) interests in this regard.

But he is "old school" in this way, and sure isn't going to change. He revels in self depracation and in talking up the opponent. I think he's always been raised to believe that's a great show of humility and respect.

And, I'll still take that all day long over the piece of work they have trolling the sideline (and always on the court) at UK, for example.

We should honor K by kicking his 1000-win-havin' ass tonight!

After the way the Duke coaches, players and fans honored Coach Smith a couple of weeks ago it seems that this sign of class and accomplishment is only fair.

This is some sort of Jedi mind trick by Roy, with a double voodoo hex thrown in for good measure.

I'll be there and will BOOOOOOOOOOOOOO like crazy. I don't care what the dookies did at HIS ... screw him!!

I'm not a big fan of this either, just seems like it's kinda out of place for me . . Is this Roy's way of reciprocating the gesture that dOOk had and showed for Dean Smith . . ?

I definitely would not cheer or applaud if I was in attendance tonight, and just to be fair, I wouldn't 'BOO' the man because someone at UNC decided to honor 1K's accomplishment . .

For me, I think I'd just let it go . .

I just want the building to come down when the Seniors are introduced.

While I don't really agree with this, I pray that no one actually boos K. That will truly make us look worse than this idea.

For the record, I've attended many UNC-dook games - and I ALWAYS boooo The Rat when he's introduced ... mainly because I think he sucks and he's an arrogant ass clown. I see no reason to change my course of action tonight.

While I am usually all for booing anything and everyone Dook related, this just doesn't seem like a good idea. We've faced enough backlash from media and detractors. They'd have a field day with that. I just think we shouldn't attempt to make waves with such a minuscule irritant like this.

JMHHO.

Just not for this. Maybe when he actually wins 1,000, someone can honor him. But as Boheim learned yesterday, wins can easily be taken away.

I don't this would have been done if they hadn't done the pregame thing at Duke.

Plus, we got a lot of big recruits on campus tonight

I guarantee you that there will be a LOUD CHORUS of booooo's for the Rat tonight. Many folks do not know this "honoring" is going to happen and when it does, it's going to catch them off guard and there will be a quick, negative emotional reaction.

Steve Kirschner (SID) said this was planned BEFORE Dean passed ... so it's not a response to what they did for Dean at HIS.

Oh, I'm pretty much expecting that at this point. If they are going to boo, then by all means feel free. But I hope everyone won't be surprised when the negative backlash comes a'knockin. Lord knows we don't need anymore of that.

I wish we had a "like" button on here, so I could press it on everything Bleed said on this. Screw the rat, there's a time and a place for everything and this is not it! Honor him with a big swift kick in the A$$.

The whole thing is just really bizarre. If you choose to take Kirschner at his word that is fine, we have no reason to believe he is a liar.

But this type of behavior is unprecedented. You just don't honor another program for their success. And certainly not a rival program. And certainly the yin and yang type best in sports rivalry that this is.

Think about what this does for our Giles/Ingram type recruits in the building who are squarely on the fence between the two schools. This is our opportunity to show the Dean Dome can rock louder than Cameron, that Roy can out coach K, that we have as bright of a future as they do.

Yet we're going to spend the first 5 minutes of the game celebrating the competition? Why? And for whose benefit?

It certainly won't be for our fan base and I'm assuming not for our players either. Is it just so Roy can feel warm inside? If so, this is another example of the man's unreal stubborn behavior. I'm as big of a Roy fan as there is and spend so much time defending him against the nay sayers, but this is inexplicable. What good comes from it? Are we equating Coach K's 1000 wins to that of Dean's life? Because the two are not the same.

1000 is an impressive achievement, tainted as they may be by multiple swept under the rug scandals and the fact that over 100 of those wins came at Army. But they can celebrate it on their own court.

What's next? Are we going to hang a banner for their next title? Is Roy going to give K a massage at halftime?

IT'S A RIVALRY. Take your wins and shove them...and then let's make sure they don't get another one tonight.

^ The recruits will remember a UNC win over K's 1000 (a lot of cupcake home games and barely any road games OOC) celebration.

honoring the man who has his players cheap shot our players is beyond stupid.
2/3 of the arena despise coach k
great idea roy.

Makes me want to yack!!! We can honor him when he is passed...i can see that...but now? Especially with the Sandusky like cloud hanging over him...bad move. But I'm used to it the last 5 years. Go Heels!!

You guy's do understand that this is all just a game right? And that these coaches and players don't actually hate one another? Right? Show some class fellas.

hey you folks would NEVER do that, NEVER.... you have ZERO class, and do not come on here and lecture us.

Really?! Zero class?! Your's is the board that consistently is made up of people whining about the refs and calling our coach a rat or rat face. I have nothing against you guy's or your coach. I think Roy is a classy guy and yet some of you on here don't follow his lead at all. We honored the late great Coach Smith and now you guy's honored our Coach. I thought it was classy, unlike some of the comments on here.

We cannot hold a candle to your boards.... seems like you guys have a 50 page thread on the Carolina way at DI, filled with mockery and laughs and dancing on our grave You have just had a blast at our troubles over the last few years while covering up YOUR corruption with Lance Thomas and now possibly with the sex attacker suetheman..

Please spare me the lectures. you spout off all this gibberish about class but you guys, led by your coach are little more than goons . Who got a flagrant 1 tonight???

From laettner to danhtay to that Punk Henderthug we all know what you guys are about. Take a look at the blood that your thugs have spilled over the last twenty odd years

Hers hoping you go down A S AP in the NCAA as you have the last couple of years.
