CBS Desperate for Headlines!

Stop.
Clicking.
On.
Links.

CBS has shown throughout this whole mess that they are very, very ABC. I, for one, don't use CBS for any sports news or any actual news, period. I cringe that my office pool is using CBS' website.

troll, please do not appear to troll even when not trolling. I can appreciate our UNC fight (BBTeam) Anyway, folks don't bother with the read if you have already read enough. Otherwise, have a dip...

Dennis Dodd has been an arch-ABCer back in to the 1990s. He despises UNC as much as if he were a Wuffie. And he also despises the ACC.

Along the lines of stupid articles - UNC grad and former DTHer S/L/ Price has a hit piece in SI that is online titled "How Did Carolina Lose Its Way?"

There is no need to click on it.

Yeah I saw that in Sports Illustrated, said "wtf" loudly, and threw it away (then dug it out of the trash when I remembered it was my roommate's, not mine).

We'd be so much better off if we'd STOP EATING OUR OWN!

The DTH sucks by the way, and this is coming from a former DTH Sports writer.

That article is so full of assumption and ambiguity. It's styrofoam. It's vapid. Only thing interesting was mentioning Scott May seeing his son win in 2005.

The DTH has a long history, back to before even Charles Kuralt arrived, of bashing UNC sports, especailly football, as harmful to the university. Kuralt called for UNC to drop scholarship sports.

This SI article by an alum is right in that vein. Note that he stresses that he was proud his son did niot choose to attend UNC because of the 'scandal,' which he feels taints the entire school. Note that his son chose UCLA. Note that this alum of UNC fails to mention Sam Gilbert and the worst pay-for-play in NCAA history. Without Gilbert and a few of his friends, half or more of the UCLA hoops stars under Wooden would have gone elsewhere.

The ending of the article is especially interesting to me. He is fascinated that Roy won't come out and bash the looney toon McCants even at this date, after all that selfish. childish freak has done. Roy is loyal even to the epitome of disloyal former player.

That is there not for readers to see virtue in Roy struggling to defend his program and the university and Dean Smith while not turning on a head case who needs major psychological help. It's there for readers to conclude that just as Roy is loyal to McCants who ius at best mentally ill just because he was part of the team and thus the family, Roy and everybody else is loyal to UNC even though they know it is guilty.

I think the most important piece of information in the article is that he shows how powerful the anti-sholarship sports faction has always been at UNC. Those who have always agreed with Kuralt that UNC should abolish scholarship sports (or failing that should hold football as far down as possible and use that to scare basketball into holding itself back) are still around. Jay Smith and Mary Willingham have powerful backers in UNC administration.

There are now and always have been powerful UNC figures who fear and at times even act to prevent success in sports competition and fan base growth (and that goes double or triple for football).

I've always heard rumors of keeping fb down, now I see it.

It's real. It was there long before WW2, but the Choo Choo years brought in out in full force. UNC played in 3 consecutive New Year's Day Bowls. And Justice and other key players were all WW2 vets. Most never could have been admitted to UNC without the GI Bill that not only paid tuition for soldiers but all but forced many colleges to alter some admissions standards for military vets. The anti- scholarship sports people at UNC hated [/I]the thought of 24 and 25 year old former soldiers playing football in Carolina Blue. They literally would have preferred to lose. And the fear of being a nationally prominent football program didn't just frighten them; it infuriated them.

I will say here what I have said before about gloing non-scolarship: I see the merits. But there is no halfway. If you don't go non-schoalrship (and UNC is never going to do that), it is a waste of money to not play to be Big Time in both revenue sports, especially football, which is worth at least 4 times as much as basketball.

We'll see what happens from this, but I will not be surprised if it comes out that a group in administration has been back stabbing UNC in this whole mess because they believe the greater long term good for UNC is to greatly reduce all sports on campus.

We aint close to out of the woods yet.

Whether you want to admit it or not...and regardless if its true or not UNC athletics will always be grouped with the SMUs, UNLVs, Kentuckys of the world.

Wrong. Not even close to the scandals at those schools. Kind of a moronic statement. You must really hate UNC.
