First College Football Playoff Rankings have been released.

1. Georgia
2. Alabama
3. Notre Dame
4. Clemson
5. Oklahoma
6. Ohio State
7. Penn State

Lots of football left.

A couple fun tidbits:
  • This is the first time in the history of this CFP poll (19 total) that Utah is not ranked in the Top 25
  • Since the CFP rankings were introduced, only 5 of the 12 teams ranked in the Top 4 in the first poll of the year went on to make the playoff that year.

If Georgia and Alabama are undefeated and play in the SEC Championship game, I think they both still make the playoff if the final score is somewhat close.
You could be right, but I still believe the committee wants to stay away from having two teams from the same conference in the playoffs.

If 2 SEC teams make the playoffs, the Big Ten will explode with envious hatred. The Big Ten expects to be able to buy the best of everything, including preventing people from beating it in anything it wants to win.

Here is the funny part: the only to slow down SEC football is for ACC football to continue to rise, and that requires Notre Dame helping the ACC. But the Big Ten hates Notre Dame even as it hopes to force ND into the Big Ten, and now the Big Ten hates the ACC because of ND.

Notre Dame really needs to join a conference. There has been discussions about a slight rule change to the playoff that would require a team to win a conference championship in order to qualify. If that were to happen, ND would have no choice.

I think a lot of backing for that has evaporated as Big Ten people have realized that Notre Dame will never join the Big Ten under any circumstances. So BT people now see the current set up as better than forcing ND to go to full football member of the ACC. BT people know that ND playing for ACC championships in football will be another reinvigoration of the program.

I don't see that happening unless multiple conference champs lose more than one game.

Not necessarily. If they run the table this year and make the playoffs Then they will know it's possible to do so without being in the ACC. If they run the table, but don't make it because they didn't play in a conference championship game their chances of joining increase. I think it would take multiple years of that happening for them to make the move, but there would be serious consideration if that happened this year.

n. dame will never join the acc in football. they're too good for us (in their opinion).

Good discussion. I agree with @MWHeels that if Georgia and Alabama win out and then the SEC Championship Game is somewhat close, both teams will make the playoff. Obviously there's caveats such as ND also needing to win out to make Georgia's win look good, etc. etc., but it's certainly plausible.

I also agree that ND missing out on the CFP this year with one loss will really push them closer to the verge of joining the ACC full time. The last few weeks of this season are fascinating to me because there are so many potential ramifications. We've already seen the Big 12 regroup and install a conference championship game in response to the CFP Committee's criteria. What will Notre Dame do if they're left out? What will other conferences do if Notre Dame does makes it in, even without winning a conference championship?? That would be a big slap in the face to the Big 12 because of the contradictions. I have to imagine the Big 12 would freak out if that happened. Furthermore, if Clemson loses again, they are OUT and I think the ACC is out unless Virginia Tech can run the table. Even if they do, it would cheapen their win against Clemson (or NCSU, heaven forbid) in the ACCCG because it would be a rematch, and because Clemson would have multiple losses.

It's going to be a wild finish. IMO, the Pac 12 is definitely out of the playoffs. The Big 12 is teetering. What if two conferences get left out? The CFP folks and FBS ADs have sworn up and down that they're set on staying at 4 teams for a long while (which I agree with), but if two conferences got left out, the talk of 5- or 8-team playoff would intensify.

Completely disagree, the committee wants the 4 best teams, & under that scenario Georgia & Alabama will be 2 of the best 4 teams.

The Miami D looked like a National Champ D tonight against VT.

Game Day next Saturday is in Miami. ND will still be #3 in the poll. How high will Miami go up this week?

I'm thinking they climb to 6-7. If they beat ND next week, they might jump into the top 4.

I have to disagree. The committee doesn't care about the 4 best teams, they want the 4 best ratings draws. Unfortunately for them they have to pick the teams under the guise of being the four best teams. But if there's any picks that are remotely close, they'll go with the better ratings draw.
