Chances Heels win the national championship

I believe that if the Heels won the national title this year, it would be perhaps the greatest and most unlikely title run in NCAA Tournament history. They would have to beat Wisconsin, and then likely have to go through Arizona next. It gets even more brutal after that. Greater than 95% chance that Kentucky would be waiting for them in the national semifinals. If a miracle happened and the Heels won that, there is a strong chance that this would be THE YEAR the Heels finally meet Duke in the Tournament in the rivalry game to end all rivalry games. As far as I am concerned, if the Heels pulled this off, it would be more improbable than NC State's 1983 run to the title.

This outcome would take THE most disciplined, focused 3 game performance Roy has had from a team in 4 years. Not saying it won't happen, but they would have to become the team they haven't been...

...yet.

It sure would be an uphill, hard work, long shot. Hard (especially for this inconsistent team) to string 2 GREAT games together, let alone 4, which is what would be required against (likely) - Wisc, then AZ, then UK, (then Dook?)

....meanwhile, Dook could have Utah, maybe Gonzaga, maybe MSU, then Kentucky/AZ/Wisc/ UNC? Seems like 1, maybe 2 tough games for them on their side of the bracket.

The good thing is we don't have to worry about anything but the next game. Win that one, take your momentum and get ready for the next one. After each win down "murderer's row" we gain a little confidence and experience. One thing for certain, if we knock em all off and end up with the N/C we would have darn sure EARNED it! One game at a time.

It would likely take beating a 2 seed and 3 1 seeds. Would probably be the most impressive title run ever

It would be like beating 4 #1 seeds in a way, Arizona would have probably been a better 1 seed than Villanova.

Before the tournament began, the odds on the Heels winning were 25:1. I think there were only 6 teams with better odds. So while I agree that the potential path to a championship would be the most brutal 4 game stretch in the history of the tournament, the odds would say that the Heels winning it would not be anywhere close to the biggest longshot to have ever won.

Let's just beat Wisconsin and see where this goes.

A Final Four appearance for this team wouldn't be as big as the Final Four UNC had in 2000

A Championship would be the biggest in team history. Debatable in NCAA History, but roll call wouldn't take very long

85 Nova was much more of a long shot than UNC this year. 8 seed who beat a 35-2 Georgetown team with Patrick Ewing.

That would be 1997. Arizona was a #4 seed (coincidence?). They got through #13 South Alabama 65-57 in the round of 64. The round of 32 matched them with #12 College of Charleston which they squeaked by (73-69). Sweet Sixteen was big, bad #1 Kansas which they won 85-82. Elite Eight pitted #10 Providence which they again won a nailbiter (96-92). Onward and upward to the Final Four against our beloved #1 North Carolina Tar Heels which they won 66-58. Next up in the National Championsip was #1 Kentucky which the improbably won 84-79. Thats three #1's they went through to get the title.

Looking to this year, Carolina went through #13 Harvard and #5 Alabama. Next will be #2 Wisconsin (should've been a 1 seed), then probable matchup with #2 Arizona (another team that could've easily been a #1). Final Four would potentially bring the undefeated #1 Kentucky Wilcats, then katie bar the door, a National Championship match up with #1 and arch rival dook Blue Devils.

UNC was in a tough bracket anywway. Arizona and Wisconsin are exceptional teams. That's just our regional bracket! Then you throw in the task of beating Kentucky, then Gonzaga and/or Duke? That's an exceptionally tall order. If they somehow pulled that off then I think there would be a mandatory moratorium on criticizing Roy Williams for perpetuity.

If they got out of this region, beat undefeated UK, and met and beat the dookies in the championship, I am not sure that feat or that feeling could ever be topped. But man is that a daunting task!

While I'd be thrilled beyond belief for the Heels to make the title game, this is not the year i'd relish meeting dook there. It would be very difficult to enjoy.

...are largely proportional to the number of minutes we spend in multi-Guard lineups as well as the minutes Joel Berry plays.

And BTW: This team is more talented than the 1983 State team. However the strength of that State team was that it relied on their Guards (Lowe, Wittenberg and Gannon).

Yeah not exactly sure what my brain was thinking. Lol. Its more like two #1's in our bracket with Wisconsin and Arizona.

You're gonna be hard pressed to find anyone think this is one of the greatest shocks ever, given we were a 4 seed, ranked top 20 nationally all year, and started the season in the top 5.

That won't compare to State or Nova, although to us- it may feel like it given the ups and downs we've experienced as fans this season.

Nothing would be better than beating dooK in Natty game wearing road unis

Agreed. And nothing would be worse than losing to them in the same situation, with almost no
chance of settling that score in the future.

Slim chance. Very slim. I just don't see this team being talented enough to get much further, much less the championship. But even more than talent, I just don't see this bunch being anywhere consistent enough to play the kind of ball you have to play to win six games in this tournament. Pretty happy getting to round of 16 with this team. Anything else would be icing on the cake, but I just don't see any icing at hand.

Even though Durham is further south than Lexington and it ruins it a little - you could think of running Wisky, Ariz, KY, Duke as beating the best team from the North, West, South, and East in consecutive games to win the title - along the way beating the likely the 3 top finishers for National Player of the Year, the likely the top 2 picks in the next NBA draft, beat our 2nd biggest rival stopping them from being the first undefeated team in 40 years, and then beat our biggest rival - a rivalry some consider the best rivalry in sports - for the National Title. I 100% endorse this, sounds like a fun next 10 days or so. I think there's a pretty good chance that would become the most famous tourney runs of all time - I don't know if it's the most improbable - but I bet it would become the most famous just because of the profile of the programs involved, stopping an unbeaten KY, and then the spectacle of the UNC/Duke title game. .
