"When Chazz Surratt started racking up awards this winter, we thought the East Lincoln quarterback was receiving recognition for an athletic career that had already finished.Surratt became the first football player ever to earn The Gazette’s Player of the Year award in three consecutive seasons. He was named the Gatorade North Carolina Player of the Year, Associated Press state Player of the Year, and Parade Magazine put him on the short list of ten finalists for the magazine’s annual Player of the Year Award.Surratt accepted the awards with graciousness and humility, a reflection of his character on and off the field. The University of North Carolina signee, who has a 4.5 GPA, carries himself with poise. When parents and community members approached Surratt to congratulate him after a win this fall, Surratt always answered with “yes, sir,” and “no, ma’am.” When one of the younger East Lincoln fans wanted an autograph, Surratt made time."
