Penalties. A Fedora bugaboo re-reared its ugly head today. 12/penalties, 135-140 yds?? Fed has always had penalty-prone teams, but until today, this team had been REALLY good in this area. The Dinkins jawing flag bothers me most...kids need to be disciplined in those key down/distance situations. Dinkins needs to run stadium steps for that BS, in a weighted vest.

DBs face guarding. All you need to do is look back. Otherwise, the coverage was there. But absent the look around, they are going to call it. Period. Every time.

DEs setting the edge on the zone read play. Regression w/ regards to that today.

Fedora/Littrell brain farts inside the opposition's 30 yd line. From the stupid 2 pt. try off the XP formation, to the sideways on 2nd and 2 in the 4th Q, the insistence on passing in goal-to-go sets when we have the ingredients to have a bigtime downhill run game in those situations.... it's all so head scratching. IMHO, Fed has grown enamored of the "explosive" play to the point of obsession and if not corrected, will end up hurting the overall offensive output. The INT in the 2nd Q led DIRECTLY to that game being in doubt to the end....if we take that in for a TD and make it 20-10 and eat up a couple, three minutes, uva never scores that FG to tie it at halftime. Then we cruise in the second half to about a 33-10/W, even WITH all the other warts.

Other clean up prior to Thurs. night?

The stupid penalties and lazy DB play were the two most obvious tonight. As you said, penalties haven't been a big problem this season until this game. Fortunately we still kept UVA from taking advantage of those gaffes but we CANNOT have 10+ penalties Thursday night.

I said in a previous post that the secondary concerned me a great deal without MJ Stewart. The shuffling that had to be done in the secondary has led to lackluster results in my opinion. MJ returning will give out secondary a boost at the right time and others can go back to there original positions. Those penalties in the secondary would have cost us the game against better opponents.

its doable because the team is showing heart and better coached on the defensive side, not bad at all so far, so goofy penalties hurt but not like last year that was ugly defense

I know this; the next 5 games are a whole different set of teams than the previous 7 have been. This is when the real competition starts.

That unsportsmanlike when they held them on 3rd down stung the most.
that was a call that shouldn't have been made. A UVa. receiver did worse on a couple of occasions but no flags. Refs shouldn't make themselves the focus.

Agree to a point, but I think GT compares competitively w/ ANY team left that we play (shoulda beat Pitt, and played MISERABLY vs. Dook). And laugh all you want, but Illinois would compete w/ our last 5, as would (and will) uva. I said it earlier in the week, and I still believe it, uva isn't a bad team. Not well-coached, but at some point their athletes are gonna have a good day and they're gonna smack someone.

All in all, yeah, the competition is a step up. Do I think it's a chasm of difference? No. At worst, I see a 3-2 finish...but we could win them all, too. We are not a complete team, for sure, but no one we have left to play is, either.

Oh, absolutely. I think UNC has the players and ability to win all the remaining games. If some of these weird calls would even-out, it would certainly help. We would have won a few of these past games by bigger margins.

But, we still get too many penalties and we'll be playing teams with as much at stake as we have, or more. Pitt, dook, and UNC all have the same record. Miami, VT and NCSU have worse records, but they're still fighting for all they can get.

Need to clean up the pass protection and limit the number of hits #12 takes. Heck had a bad, bad game today which is unlike him. He got beat a handful of times, which led to Marquise getting absolutely drilled. I think that UVA was looking to hit Quise late the whole game too. They did not hesitate to hit him well after he got rid of the ball. But yeah, pass protection is usually a strength but wasn't today. Blocking on the periphery and by the running backs was excellent today, but the OL struggled at times in pass protection.

Yes, more incompetent officiating. UVA players taunted several times after plays, one that was especially obvious and refs just pushed the player back. UNC does it, and is flagged Was it a penalty, yes, but only if you call it both ways. The illegal man downfield penalty that was called was also not called on UVA in the 2nd half when it was more than obvious. Some PI calls were obvious, but some were a joke of a call. I didn't see the offensive PI at the end of the first half. UNC won despite poor officiating for the 3rd straight game. The ACC does not want UNC in the title game and it is so obvious. The ACC and John Swofford can go to hell.

For the 2nd straight game we turned the ball over 2x in the 1st half and our opponent had 0 turnovers. It cannot continue.

If I'm not mistaken, the Virginia game was the first time an opponent scored off of our TO.. I believe they got a FG off of it. I could be wrong on that stat..

IIRC, WF got their 1st half TD after a MW pass batted up by a UVA lineman at the LOS was intercepted by a UVA DB, giving the Deacs a short field for a short (3plays?) TD drive.

did we play WF and UVa at the same time? Damn I thought the only thing I missed was the PI on mack Hollins when I went to the concession stand early..
