Hey all! New to the board, but I've been following threads here for the last few months and everyone seems really well informed, so I'm excited to contribute. I'm a new Tar Heel fan actually, I am moving down to Chapel Hill for the first time next week to start grad school at UNC! I'm originally from California but live in NYC now, so I'm excited to be in such a beautiful college town. My UNC fandom started on Feb 1 this year when I found out I was admitted to UNC with a full scholarship, so I only have a half season's worth of following the team but am already obsessed. I've always been a huge basketball fan but never had a college team to follow.
Anyway, I've noticed a lot of different takes on how many scholarships we have available, and I think I can shed some light on the situation. Here is where our scholarship roster stands:
Seniors: Hicks, Meeks, Britt, White
Juniors: Jackson, Berry, Pinson
Sophomores: Williams, Maye
Freshman: Bradley, Woods, Robinson
2017: Felton, Platek
2018: Black, White
As you can see we only have 12 scholarship players for 2016, which as a new college fan I'm still trying to understand why you'd leave a spot unfilled. It seems like a great opportunity to bring a big man in so we'd have a bit more experience for 2017 but I'm guessing Roy tried and couldn't find any mutual interest. So that means we have 5 openings for 2017, the four seniors plus the unused spot this year.
Two of those spots are already filled by Felton/Platek, but that still leaves three more. In addition, if any of the juniors go pro (which I think at least one is most likely) we get another spot opened up. So there's very little reason to assume a 6 man class is not available, and even 7 is possible. That means we can take a PG (Sexton/Spoon/Coleman), a SF (Randolph/Wilkes), and still take two bigs. I see no reason to worry for next year. It looks like Roy has thought this all out pretty well.
For 2018 we have at least 3 spots (2 currently filled by Black and White haha) even if we take a full 6 man class this year, assuming Tony Bradley goes pro after 2 years. He could stay longer, or we might only take 5 this year as many people on this board are suggesting. The latter would leave a fourth spot open. Also, potentially one of the 2017 class will be a OAD, opening an additional spot.
Regarding Maye, he is a scholarship player, not a walk-on (source: http://www.dailytarheel.com/blog/press_box/2014/11/luke-maye-commits-to-unc). He was guaranteed a scholarship for his last three years, and ended up receiving one for his first year as well because we only had 12 guys.
Regarding Shea Rush, he is a preferred walk-on, NOT a scholarship player. (source: http://www.scout.com/college/north-carolina/story/1642517-rush-to-walk-on-at-unc , and here: http://www.kansascity.com/sports/high-school/article60366866.html) so he does not count against the 13 scholarship limit. Perhaps Roy will decide to offer him a scholarship in his final year or two, but in general I would not include him when counting scholarships.
