I'm reading about the heavy Dook lean EJ Montgomery visiting today and started wondering (yes, its a slow work day)....

Do you think coaches send uncommitted players to unofficial or even official visits to other schools, and especially rival schools to learn recruiting pitches, gain info or just straight up troll the other University? Seems like a lot of effort with some risk the player actually likes the target school but I wouldn't put ANYTHING past the Rat.

Anyone in the know if this kid of thing happens?

I absolutely believe certain coaches promote an espn announcement for certain top recruits to help promote their program. I also believe certain coaches (capel) insinuate they are trailing in a recruitment or worried about school “X” just to troll said school when all along they know they have the kid in the BAG. (Pun intended).

Without in any way attributing it to this situation, the short answer is yes (but not for info per se), occasionally. It happens more in football, but it happens from time to time in hoops as well.

I know of some specific cases, but in general it's dirty pool for the purpose of getting an opponent to hold a scholly for someone he's not gonna get, and perhaps lose out on others in the process --- trolling if you will, for a very sinister purpose. And I'll throw something else in that some faint-of-heart folks aren't gonna like to hear --- the schools who engage in that are, more often than not, the schools that are dirty in other way$.

Again, unless I hear different, I have no indication that EJ would be involved with that. The kid was firmly committed to Auburn for a long time and didn't troll anyone while he was --- he only reopened his recruitment because of the Chuck Person fiasco. Roy is recruiting him because he has reason to believe we have a good shot (and his post game has improved), plus the family openly wanted the offer. Now, will we ultimately prevail over the like$ of Capel and Wes? That's a whole nuther question...

What you have to realize is when these athletes go broke they write books and tweet and go on ESPN claiming anything and everything (McCants) So you have to watch yourself ..
