First of all, let me say I am a total supporter of this team and Roy. So this is not anything personal. This is just to start a conversation that may have been missed deep in some of the threads out there. A lot of folks are talking about this.

Here is the subject that many have commented on recently including AJ and Mike. I will let them speak for them selves, but as a long time high school coach(35 years) i think this is something that needs to be discussed for all to see.

Is UNC's defensive approach, namely Roy's handling of three point shooting defense, especially not switching on screens, old and antiquated?

My personal opinion is Roy still takes the Dean Smith approach of forcing the opponent to take the tougher shot. This worked well when a three was a two, and the offense gained no advantage by shooting it....but not when a three is worth three. Kids can make that shot now. We need to switch more on screens rather than give up an open three. In Roys defense (meaning I'm taking up for him) if his guards don't get beat consistently, then others can stay in position and not have to close out on the shooter, but right now we are getting beat with dribble penetration and high ball screens.....we can't bring back JP or Jackie, or Phelps. So it is what it is. I personally think we need to consider changing our perimeter defensive approach by more switching on screens and using a point zone more at times. I think when we play a team like Duke (three happy) you will be screaming this. This is why other coaches put us in high ball screens, they know. They have done their homework. They know this is a weakness. Watch for yourself how open the big man is on high ball screens. Just watch...and they still get an open three. It's not going to be long until someone kills us with high ball screens and rolls their big man to the basket. Right now they are shooting the three because they have not noticed it yet or the ball pressure won't allow the pass. Just believe me for a second and watch next time on high ball screens if the guard would immediately pass to the big man how open he is to the basket. Dunk every time. This one is coming in NCAA tourney, but that's off subject. I'm talking 3 defense. What do you guys think?
