March 19, 1988, UNC beat a run and gun Loyola Marymount team in Salt Lake City by a score of: 123-97 in a real track meet. I know there are several old timers here like myself who remember that contest and I would not be surprised to see the two teams this weekend top the combined 220 points scored that day if Auburn is brave enough to actually try and run with Carolina.

Iona said they would run with us as well. I hope they do as it usually doesn't work too well for the opponent . I remember the Loyola game well. They did a lot of jawing heading up to that game. As I remember it wasn't as close as the final score indicated

I remember all you heard up to that game how they were gonna run us out of the gym. They came into the game as the highest scoring team in the nation. What the met was a buzzsaw, that had blue steel in with 7-8 min left, having already scored over 100.

I remember that game well and it was fun to watch. LMU had Bo Kimble and Hank Gathers who would lead the nation in scoring AND rebounding the following year. Sadly, Gathers died on the court in 1990 from a heart condition.

Having said that, UNC had better be prepared for Auburn because they are more dangerous and disciplined than 1988 LMU.

A lot of outsiders focus on three point shooting, but Auburn at their best also forces a ton of turnovers

Kansas was hitting 50 percent of their shots and still trailing by 20 or 25 points at one time because of all their turnovers.

Florida hit almost 70 percent of their shots against Auburn in the SEC tournament and still lost because of all their turnovers

Auburn only has one player taller than 6'8" and he has been injured a lot of the year. That has made their defense vulnerable to low post scoring, offensive rebounding, and even drives to the basket.

But Auburn still puts effort into defense by forcing turnovers. That Loyola Marymount team straight up didn't care about defense

There are only a few teams that bother me in the tournament and 3 of 4 are in the midwest. Auburn, Kentsucky, and Houston. The other is Tennesee that survived a scared yesterday from Iowa. All are human and we are capable to beat all of them...but turnovers. We had way too many yesterday. Auburn isnt washington. they will convert where washington didnt. Gotta take care of the ball.

Usually (I stress usually) we beat teams that try to play our style. They just aren't as good at doing it and usually don't have the depth to keep running with us.

That said, Auburn shoots the 3 lights out. If we don't defend it then we will lose.

And we will do the normal "double down in the post" and leave marksman wide open out on the perimeter... hoping they miss enough of them.

I know, and it never works out for us. Oh wait....we won the ACC and have made it to the Sweet 16........

So we go 3/29/2019 at 7:29pm Friday on TBS.

We better be ready, their top 10 in minutes shoot well and do not turn it over too much.

I remember this game well, lots of people doubted if we could keep up with them because of the way they played but dean turned it the opposite
way and beat that team soundly!

Dangerous team. Think Auburn had (and has) the highest upside of any non 1 or 2 seed in the tournament. They're final four good when they're playing at their best.

Will be interesting because Coby hasn't faced this kind of full court pressure this season (at least I don't recall a team that presses as often as Auburn may). I kind of wish Oliver Purnell still coached at Clemson just to get a rep playing against that style. Auburn plays a unique brand of ball.

They're going to throw a lot of "junk" defenses at us. I'm more comfortable with this team facing any kind of zone than past Roy teams but it wouldn't surprise me if Bruce Pearl does some weird things (triangle and 2, box and one when Roy goes to his bench, etc).

But here's the reality. Especially without a mid major that has busted everyone's bracket, no one should be surprised with any result from here on out. Each team remaining is pretty damn good, pretty well coached and can play with anyone on any given day. I would be somewhat surprised if Virginia doesn't beat Oregon but apart from that, these match ups are pretty even.

auburn may be the most underrated team in the tournament, a team peaking at the right time with a strong combination of athleticism and outside shooting. anyone who watched them the last part of the season knows this, and i had a feeling the committee would put them in our bracket.

Carolina should destroy Auburn on the boards. But as many have stated, turnovers will be the key. I would like to make them play inside out instead of outside in. Deny 3 point lanes, and don't help on dribble drives. Either way it will be tough as Auburn is quick, fast and deadly from deep.

I am worried about every game at this point in any Tourney! All the pretenders have been weeded out. I feel better because CW has faced some dadgum elite on the ball defenders and he is tough as they come. Outr team has faced teams that play physical and expend energy on D and won so..... We will turn the ball over because we play fast, we have to get rid of the unforced or sloppy TOs or we could be looking at an uphill battle! The good news....I trust this team to fight to the end and I don't see anybody to fear when we are playing at our best! (doesn't mean nobody can beats us, but we will be in it until the final buzzer!)

Heels win!

Y'all are overrating Auburn. They won't outrebound us. They take a lot of ill-advised shots, which will play right into our hands. They made them against Kansas. They won't against us, because we are better.

There may be some misconception as to how Auburn plays. They actually are not a full court run and shoot type team. When they’re forcing turnovers they get out in transition but are only middle of the pack nationally in adjusted tempo. They rank very high in opponent’s length of possession before first shot.

They will pick their spots to run if we are coughing the ball up but otherwise I wouldn’t expect them to try and run with us up and down the court. They will look to make us work hard for shots in the half court and methodically work for open 3s on their end. We will need to crush them on the glass and resist over helping on D. Force them to take contested 2s around the rim instead of wide open threes.

I agree. I think they're the perfect team for us - they will TRY to run and keep up ... and, like many others, they will fail. (think Arkansas in prior years)

Auburn has only lost two games by more than 8 points all year. Auburn's nine losses this year:

A 6 point loss to Duke on a neutral court

A 7 point loss at North Carolina State

A 15 point loss at Ole Miss
.
A 8 points loss at Mississippi State

A 3 point loss at South Carolina

A 2 point loss to Kentucky at home

A 27;point loss at Kentucky

A 5 point loss at LSU

A 5 point loss to Ole Miss at home

All those teams made NCAA tournament except South Carolina and North Carolina State.

Auburn comes into the North Carolina game on a 10 game winning streak. Won last 4 games of regular season, won 4 games in SEC tournament, and 2 games in NCAA tournament

Yep, and they're running into the hottest team since 2019 rang in, with the best in-game coach in the field ... and they will lose by 11.

No lead will be safe in this one. I think Brooks and Little are going to need to contribute big time defensively and on the boards in this one. Leaky has the length to disrupt and hopefully sees some minutes as well.

Auburn is the hottest team right now with 10 straight wins, 6 vs tournament teams and was actually tired this week from playing 4 games in 4 days and winning the sec tournament. 2 of their last 3 wins have been double digit dominations over a 4 seed and a current 2 seed. The Kansas blowout was their 6th win in 9 days.
North Carolina is absolutely capable of winning this game. They "should" win this game. But Auburn will be well rested by game time.

They're playing well, no doubt ... but 4 of those 10 wins are over Georgia, Bama, little Carolina and Mizzou ... who are a combined 16 games under .500 for the season.

But above the records I will always hold player and coaching experience above all else this late in the season. Roy > Bruce by a country mile in every possible category ... and we have two starters who've played in two National Championship games and five players who've been to a Final Four. That matters. Big time.

No doubt, Carolina has the coaching, the players, the experience, the history and the prestige. Auburn is historically one of the worst basketball schools in the country.
But they're on a pretty solid streak and just destroyed Kansas in their 6th game in 9 days. Not an all time great Kansas, but not a bad one either.

Just glad we get some time to rest. I like our chances. Not gonna be disappointed in losing. We have a brutal road if we actually want to win out. Kansas, North Carolina then likely Kentucky, then likely Virginia and probably end with Duke. Just a gauntlet of Blue Blood basketball powers. Just gonna enjoy it while we can. Doesn't come that often for us

It is, without a doubt, the most wonderful time of year! I'm glad Auburn fans are getting to experience it.
