He is starting a true freshman QB, and, much worse, that QB is not known for running the ball.

Poor Clemson fans. I pity them so much I offer Larry Fedora, who as Dabo's OC will correct that decision and run the QB he plays so often that top RBs will head elsewhere.

Now we have speculation that Kelly Bryant is mulling a transfer. The new redshirt rule means he can transfer now, playing no more for Clemson, and play his SR season next year for a new school.

Last year, Clemson has Hunter Johnson as the true frosh QB. He was not what Lawrence is, but almost everyone assumes he has a nice NFL future ahead of him. Wisely, he chose not to hang around because of the 1-2 punch of Dabo going with Bryant and then signing Lawrence. He is now a Northwestern.

I assume that if Dabo had any doubts about playing Lawrence from Day 1 and then moving to name him the starter, the Johnson transfer and the new rule made up his mind. If Dabo had done a Fedora (only 1 QB plays and that one will be the QB I, offensive genius Larry Fedora, see as the best overall athlete, which features running the ball), Lawrence right now could be transferring to an SEC school to play next fall.

Surely even Fedora is not so delusional that he thinks he can get away with keeping another Trubisky riding the pine even 2 years.

Fortin had his SR year of HS ruined: broken leg in the 2nd game. If he had remained healthy, he might have become a 4* recruit. If he remains healthy, he almost certainly s NOT going to sit for 4 or even 3 years as Fedora keeps trying to find his ideal running QB. If Fortin plays in no more than 4 games this year, and he concludes that Fedora's obsession with QBs running the ball is not waning, he may well declare 2018 his redshirt season and go elsewhere.

I understand every kid wants to play, but to decide to transfer right away just seems weak. Why not use the demotion as motivation to get better and earn the starting job back?

Lawrence is a natural, who could be a Hall of Famer. Unless he gets injured, he is not going to get beat out - unless the fix is in.

Just as Bama would not have won the Championship last year without playing Tua, Clemson will not have any chance to win it all this year, or even reach the Final, without Lawrence at QB, lighting up the passing attack.

That may all be true, but if he transfers to a school that only has QBs with less talent than him and he "beats them out" for the starting job, that doesn't mean anything to me. Now, if he competes against his equal or even someone slightly better and becomes the starter, that's impressive.

Lawrence may be a natural but no way they win that Texas A&M game without Bryant.

Perhaps so, but they game planned to start and use Bryant roughly half the time. We can't be certain how things would have played out if they had game planned to go with Lawrence the entire game.

Here is what is true: there is no way Clemson could have beaten A&M without Lawrence, whose huge arm rattled the Aggies with his first pass.

Here is what else is true: Bryant has a sense of entitlement. No doubt having him playing a couple series or more each game would help Clemson by forcing Ds to revamp. Dabo isn't Fedora refusing the play the 2nd team QB. Dabo would play Bryant all season. Bryant is refusing to accept being other than the starting QB.

He’s transferring. Announced in an interview.

He would not be eligible to transfer if he plays in another game. He had to quit immediately.

We should go all in on convincing him to come to chapel hill.

Hard pass. We need to develop what we have. He would only impede the young guys we have.
Bryant is much better than Brandon Harris, but you are correct that if Fedora were to take Bryant, we'd reap some unintended consequences. It almost certainly would guarantee the transfers of a couple of our QBs.

QB is so far from being our only big problem that it is at best silly to try to bring in a transfer. Elliott just had a great game against Pitt. Did he suck against Cal? You bet, and he still led the team in rushing yards. And that means we have other major issues on offense than QB.

We have major issues across the program, with talent not being developed fully and erratic game plans and play calling. A grad transfer QB will solve nothing and almost certainly will cause new issues.

Yeah they’re developing really well on the bench right now...

I’ll be surprised if either of them is still here next year tbh

Well, if you were to bring him in they would be guaranteed to sit on the bench next year as well. And like you and @WoadBlue have mentioned, it would most likely cause at least one QB to transfer. Then we will be stuck in the same situation next year. It just doesn't make sense long term to bring him in.

Fair enough. Lets just hope one of them is good enough to beat out Chazz, or we have that same problem, but with a significantly less talented QB1

I worry about that too. A wise coach would have taken full advantage of the new rule to play at least one of our frosh QBs each of the first 4 scheduled games.

Fedora's way - I play 1 QB all year unless there is injury - is not going to work well going forward. More and more QBs will get pissed off within a couple of years and leave. That will disrupt the QB development even more, meaning either we sign an obvious QB Star To Be every 3rd class or we go for the grad transfer QBs at least every other year.

I agree that we're doing a very poor job of developing our young QB's. I also agree that Bryant isn't the answer to our problems. Most of our problems start at the top.

Hard to place blame on anybody in this situation. Obvious to most that Lawrence is more talented and still has an upside that will grow with experience. I read above where someone said that Bryant felt entitled. I don't know about entitled, but easy to understand how a QB that led you to the playoffs, and had lost only two games in his time as a starter (one of those when he got knocked out of the game) felt that he had done all he could to deserve to start, with Lawrence putting in his time as backup until it was his turn. But Clemson isn't worried about the ACC. They are worried about how to best be prepared for Alabama. And made the decision the Lawrence was the better option. And kudos to Dabo for handling it as he did. He could have easily started Bryant this week, thus burning any red shirt possibilities. Protecting himself with an experienced backup QB in case of injury to Lawrence. But he chose to be up front and give Bryant the option of transferring if he wanted. And this move will play well with recruits and only enhance their already success in recruiting elite athletes. Like they need it. Nobody did anything wrong here. Bryant got beaten out by a better player. Coaching staff was up front about his situation. He decided he wanted to play. That meant transferrinh

I have a feeling Dabo is going to regret this decision at some point in the year. TL has a lot of upside, but he's going to look like a freshman at some point. And they're not going to have the experienced senior to fall back on when that happens. Every year we assume Clemson will easily run the table, yet they always come close to blowing a game at some point.

Doubt it this year. Don't see them having any issues with their regular season slate with a 3rd team QB. ACC just isn't up to snuff this year. Talent gap between Clemson and anyone else in the league is too great.

FSU has a bunch of talent, but it remains unorganized. Miami also has quite a bit of talent, but its gaps were exposed by LSU.

Clemson would drill them both. FSU couldn't even score on a team that couldn't stop Old Dominion. Clemson will destroy them. Miami is a decent team, but nothing special.

That’s my point. Nobody saw the Syracuse loss coming
