You are all over the target with this one AJ! It is now, it was way back when Dean was our coach, it is all about quality of shot. I fully believe MOST NCAA guys that play the 1-3 can shoot, some exceptions of course but left wide open such that the shooter can get the shot off without being rushed or hindered by a defender from a distance comfortable to that individual player is a good shot. Good shots go in at a better % than bad shots.
Caleb Love to me was a really good BAD shot maker, so much that at times he seemed to need to increase the level of difficulty of his shots just so he could enjoy it more? Leaky was a poor shooter from distance so a open look trey for him was not a good shot, no matter if he made it or not. Bad shots with good results happen all the time but it is still a bad shot even if it has a good result. Don't know that I have ever seen a team take as many bad shots as I have seen from us over the last 2 seasons and the results were really poor regular season performances.
What I have seen so far this season is this team is taking really really good shots, able to because we spread out defenses, attack with the dribble with at least 2 and many times 3 solid shooters waiting for the kick out catch and shoot as defenders leave them to try to slow the driver or handle Bacot inside.
Against Radford, you saw that for any team to try to handle Bacot with a single defender without a crowded paint is something very few teams can do, he is just so big and strong and active. But you double him you must leave someone open and on our team I see only 2 guys on scholly that I would dare to beat me with a OUTSIDE jump shot, one being Bacot and the other at least for now (based on last season) being Seth. I actually think our 7 of 20 was a extremely poor shooting night for us vs Radford, it was a typical game for us last season. I suspect just from the shear number of solid shooters that can catch and shoot as a team we should shoot treys around 40% as guys get comfortable and settle in and flirt with 50% in some games.
