$200 to every player he ever coached. The guy is still the classiest person out there even in death.

It's odd how much you can love someone you never met. Hard to imagine a better role model.

Also curious how many of these checks will get cashed vs framed.

Cash the check... frame the letter

Yes cash the check. Dean would've wanted that obviously. He WOULD NOT have wanted them to frame the letter though.

Big Brad said that he is going to have his matted and framed in his office so that he can look at it everyday. Have a feeling that plenty of those players are going to do the same thing.

Most of these guys have 0 need for that check. But I think they should cash them. Not to spend. I think they should use those checks to start fund to help former UNC athletes down on their luck. Turn Dean's final gift to hios players back to new use.

Great point. I'm sure it'd be easy enough to find Dean's favorite charity to donate the funds to for those players that don't need the $200.

Or even have one of the more financially skilled members take charge of starting up the former UNC athlete fund for all of those that would like to re-purpose the gift.

Woad, I was thinking similar thoughts. Dean's gift to these players is $ 36,000.00. Some of these guys
(Jordan, comes to mind) could put a good chunk of money with it and do a lot of goods things. Helping former
athletes is a great cause. They could also establish a scholarship in Coach Smith's name to help
an deserving student that exhibits the "Dean Smith spirit".

That is a fantastic idea.

Dean coached over 100 players. Multiply that by $200 and you get over $20,000. That would be good seed money for an endowment where the annual dividend could provide support for whatever program the trustees designate. Of course $20,000 doesnt yeild much per year. But you know if the players decided to create an endowment with their money, deep pocketed Heels supporters would throw money at it in Dean's honor. That $20,000 would quickly reach 7 or 8 figures and then provide ample annual return.

God this is soooo fkn awesome!!!!

I'm a late 80's baby so I don't remember too much Coach Smith. I can remember some 'Sheed, Stackhouse, Jamison, Vince etc. but I was sooo young.

This is tight!

Just my 2 cents:

The letter said for each player to "Enjoy a dinner out compliments of Coach Dean Smith"

That's what Coach Smith wanted. That's just what they should do. The more that can do it together, the better.

Per SI's count, he had 184 lettermen. @$200 each, thats $36,800. I'm sure a few will need the $200, and I'm sure Jordan has already put his $200 on black at the roullette table, so say somewhere between $30-35k is "up for grabs".

As for this... Dean's ultimate goal was to help the greater good, and those less fortunate than yourself. I think it would still be "in the spirit of Dean" to repurpose the money for something greater than a dinner out.

Think about it this way... if Dean was the recipient of some money aimed at a dinner for himself, don't you think he would have said, "There's someone out there who needs this more than I do?"

Do exactly what Coach ask. BEST way to honor him and enjoy his gift.

No need using common sense or logic ! Honor his wish take your family out for a meal per Coach's wish !
That is what the money was set aside for.

Easy to do both. If I was in the position I'd cash the check, eat the dinner, wipe my mouth and then write another check - honour the gift and then pay forward to someone else.

Wuffies are walking talking drooling trash heaps. All they can do is listed in that description.

Kenny Smith just had some nice words to say about Coach Smith's gesture, and that he planned to have a nice dinner at the Final Four.

It was a small gesture, but at the same time it was a HUGE gesture. Great coach, GREATER MAN!

+1

EXACTLY what I was thinking. I feel Coach Smith wanted to show appreciate to his players. This gesture is his way of saying "Go and enjoy yourselves with loved ones. Thank You for your hard work and dedication". With all of that being said, I am also confident that it would make Coach Smith proud of a former player if in turn that player showed the same gesture to someone else.
