With the chaotic live period of June now behind us, we wanted to make sure we address the many questions you guys have about North Carolina football recruiting. We got enough questions on the board to split this into two parts, and here is part two of your questions and Deana's replies:
Whosever asks: An eligibility question that affects recruiting: Does everyone who played during the COVID season of 2020 get an extra year? In other words, do guys like Anderson, McKethan and Tucker, even though they are 5-year seniors, have the option of coming back for another year if they want to?
Everyone got an extra year due to the Covid issue. So yes they can play another year if they want to. I think guys that are pursuing NFL dreams may explore their options. Some that stay may even try to improve their draft stock.
Ubuzzard asks: Where does Pettaway's recruitment stand now? Who are the Heels battling?
Pettaway has been on campus a lot. Out of the three running back targets, he has yet to announce a decision date with Omarion Hampton on July 22nd and Damari Alston on July 25th. UNC is battling Penn State, Michigan, Florida, Auburn, and Virginia in my opinion.
Dooksux asks: Has the state of Virginia been as integral to this class as it once seemed?
Virginia will always be a vital recruiting territory for UNC. They have three prime areas that the Tar Heels want to do well in upper VA near DC, Richmond, and the Tidewater. The class of 2022 in Virginia talent-wise is comparable to NC’s class of 2021. So yes it has been integral for UNC this recruiting cycle and the next.
Ohio TarHeels asks: What are our chances on getting Shaw?? Rice?? Does either have any timetable on their announcements??
Personally I like UNC’s chances of landing Shaw better because he is the in-state kid and has a lot of ties to his community. Neither kid has really mentioned a decision date but I feel Shaw might be closing in on one. Some kids have went through a whirlwind in June recruiting-wise, so a few probably are just enjoying their summer vacationing and not in a hurry. These two 5-stars can afford to wait because everybody will make room for them.
