That was the method of preserving fish years ago in my area. Locals would go inland to barter for staple items during the depression. Doubt this generation could survive times like that.

Growing up my mom would have salt fish and gravy for supper from time to time. I remember she would soak the fish in water for a day or so, changing the water often, to get the salt out of it.
 
Yeah just as the old timers did. And noir, that is fried in peanut oil. No salad
