I'm sorry but I don't think the fans who stood and cheered loud vs State should be congratulated nor should they be apologized to for the team's poor play.
The Smith Center should be one of the most intimidating places to play in all of college basketball, but unfortunately it's a library half the time. The place doesn't even seem to sell out til conference play is well underway. Sad because just 8 miles away is the most impossible place for any road team to win at in possibly all of sports. And their capacity is probably half of the Dean Dome.
Stand and be loud ALL the time! Go to the non conference games in December and do the same. The Smith Center should be the ultimate advantage!

The Dean Dome crowd has been discussed frequently recently around here. One main issue is with the placement of the donors/old alumni. There are arguments pointing out that they deserve those seats as they helped fund the construction of the building in the first place. There are counterarguments that point out that was over 30 years ago and they've gotten their fair compensation for that and it's now time to turn that area back over to students.

The decision that has to be made is do you want to please the people that helped finance the facility, or do you want to have a great atmosphere that will potentially help the Heels win a couple close games that they may have otherwise lost. Obviously I would like to see the atmosphere better, because I'm a fan of the team, but I must say that I'm also not in the old donor group, so I'm sure I'd feel differently if I were one (although I'd be willing to give up my courtside seats to see the Heels win more games but thats just me).

The other issue that I've complained about since I was a student there (graduated in 2010, so not sure if they've changed the system but I doubt it) is the ticket lottery system. The way it was set up when I was there, was that you'd have to put your student ID in for the lottery for any game you want to attend. That led people to put in their ID for every game, and if you won tickets, great. Although you were doing this months in advance of the game, so it's very possible something would come up that would prevent you from being able to go to the game, and those 2 tickets would go to waste (each time you "won" the lottery you got 2 tickets). Additionally, there were time range phases as to when you could enter the game, so if you wanted risers or lower level, you needed to get to the arena 2.5+ hours before tip off. This leads to students bringing in homework and books and reading up until tip off. Nothing gets the energy going in the student section like a good biology study session

Comparing it to Hansbrough Indoor is an apples to oranges comparison. That dump is so small its easy to get loud in. All the open space in the dean dome swallows up noise.
