This appears to be an event that will gain steam with other programs. I don't see Roy adapting to this as he is slow to change with the tide. I do believe it helps get some players as well as the program. Do you guys/gals think this would help Carolina right now or is this something for a program when you have a chance to have multiple first round pics? Maybe K has other motives.

...but we're supposed to believe these kids are amateur athletes like the NCAA tells us over and over?

The whole system is out of wack.
Every college football program does this and it works out just fine. I don't have a problem with it by itself.

Difference is that kids are at the school 3+ years for football, and not even 3 semesters for basketball. Football programs and players deserve their chance to show the type of product they produce in this setting, because the kids have been there long enough to grow as a person and player under that coach's tutelage.

Basketball programs are further reducing themselves to showcase stages by adopting this kind of event. The shorter the distance between amateur and professional becomes, the less of a difference there is between Cal, K, and a pimp. They're taking the OAD problem and exacerbating it.

I don't think UNC should do this, because they don't have an ample amount of potential 1st round picks that would attract a good crowd of NBA scouts. It'd be embarrassing to host one of these, and have 3 scouts show up.

I do think this type of thing is attractive to a potential OAD kid though, so I'd be open to doing it if we got one (or some) of them - or floating it out there that we'd be willing to do it if we got them.

Making it to the Final Four has more impact than these workouts. If the Heels can make it back again this year making it 2 years in a row without OAD's that will have more impact.

...and he's making commercials with NBA guys (no advantage, huh?).
He has jumped the Calipari shark. I have zero respect for that wanker.

So he has these 2 events that NBA scouts can attend his practices and then those scouts are no longer welcome a this practices? And making it worse, the only 2 practices scouts can attend are held before any of the freshmen have played a single game, when they are still trying to figure out sets and where their mates are supposed to be?

For a one & done it seems to me this shows them at their worst while in college, not their best which would be near the end of the regular season?

Who would you prefer? Smart has already said coaching a blue blood is a dream of his and he's the best young coach in college bball.

Source on that quote?

We still have no idea what Smart can/will achieve at Texas, yet. He's already landing 5 star talent, in state and out of state. Even beat us last year. Why leave if he keeps that momentum up? (other than "UT is not UNC", because that's a tired route).

I'd prefer not to turn this thread into a "our next H.C." thread, but a few years ago, many folks were already rubbing their hands together at the thought of Sean Miller being our next coach. Don't think many would take that route now.

If UNC basketball is calling I promise any coach on any level is listening. I would take being a successful college head coach at UNC than wondering every two years in the NBA.

When the day happens that we need another coach the list will include a lot of big time names. Dean Smith and Roy Williams are/were treated very well at UNC.

I'd prefer Stevens, but Smart isn't that much of a step down.

I assume with his NBA ties - Stevens would be open to running these type of events as well, which would be a step in the right direction.

I'd prefer Stevens also but I don't think he's leaving Boston and those NBA checks.

It may be tired, but it's true. Dozens of coaches have been quoted as saying that UCLA, UNC, Duke, Kansas, Kentucky are a different ballgame than the rest of the programs out there.

Rat face said this will not happen! No scout days! Wish I knew how to share the link. You can google it...

That is not correct. Scouts, GMs, executives, etc. are all invited and will be there.

Did you read the article? It specifically states in the first paragraph that ALL NBA teams are banned! It further states that any invitations are to be made to NBA Execs only!

We weren't talking "dozens of coaches" You said "when coach Smart takes over", as if it's a done deal. And it's not.

There's only been 1 vacancy at all 5 schools in the past 10 years. Stevens and Smart both turned that vacancy down.

Every coach might be listening, but that doesn't mean they'll come answer the call. If every coach just wanted to take a "step up" rather than building their own legacies, We'd see a bigger influx of talent to the NBA. But we don't.

Miller I doubt would come to unc as a hc if ever offered

You really couldn't see the nature of that comment just being in fun? Relax over there.

Teams (scouts, etc.) are not allowed at practices. Which is why Duke is having the pro day -- so the scouts come at one set time. Come on, keep up, its a simple concept.

Of course the invitations go to the executives -- executives run the show. The executives then, in turn, send the scouts or whoever from their organization they choose to the pro days.

Well to be fair, that definitely wasn't the first conclusion I'd jump too.

You'd be surprised at how many can make claims like that and be 100% certain as if it's fact.
