Down goes Kansas! Down goes Kansas!

While at KU, Bill Self lost to worse seeds in (started at KU in 2004): 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2011, 2010, 2007, 2006, 2005.

These two teams were tough. Our boys need to learn that nothing from here on out comes easy. Toughness wins. We need to come out focused and tough. Congrats to Nova for a W and Kansas for one heck of a team.

I have a feeling tomorrow's going to be a grind it out tough game. We're going to need to in the game mentally for 40 minutes.

Great win by Villanova. The made the key plays at the end of the game, and most importantly made all their free throws. Looking forward to watching their game against Oklahoma.

It's less about them losing to a lower seed seeing that they haven't been lower than a 3 Seed since 2007. The fact that they only have 1 title and 2 Final Fours to show for that would be concerning when you count all the talent they haul in.

I really don't think that KU is underachieving by loosing to lesser seeds in the past years as well pointed out. I think it has to do with them being over seeded based on their record which is inflated because of their conference. Put them in the ACC this year and they end up a 3 seed. Hence when they get beat it would not be an upset at this time of the year.

Oh brother...

Kansas is a really good team, they just had an off night, give Villanova credit for coming back in the 2nd half after they lost the lead! Was a heck of a game!

Kansas just plain and simple wet the bed, maybe they saw OKey got in and looked past nova a little bit recalling they had beat Oky a couple times in great games but they may have had OKeys number. They played tight and Nova's defense took over and before ya knew it there were Rock Chalk yellow streaks on the clean white sheets!

I'd like to know what seed Kansas was during those years ... More than likely they were a 1 or a 2 in most ...and in that case if you do lose chances are pretty good that it's going to be against a lower seed

Took part of this from a KC Star article. Here are all of Self's tournament losses. The bolded are loss he lost to a higher seed. The non bold are the times he lost as a higher seed.

So on average, Bill Self loses in the tournament comes when Self is seeded about 4.5 seeds higher than their opponent. And that's factoring in non "upsets" too.

Interesting .. Thanks for the stats I was too lazy to look them up myself ...they have been fairly consistent at a 1 or 2 seed though as I expected

The problem is that they play in a traditionally mediocre conference so by default they get the 1 or 2 NCAA seed ... then flame out because if they had been in the ACC or Big 10, they would have lost 4-6 conference games and been more accurately seeded as a 4 or 5. (think dook or Indy this year)

They have dominated the Big 12, which is filled with largely inconsistent programs like Baylor, WVU, Missouri, Texas, Oklahoma, etc etc.

They have too many: Bucknell-type upsets for me to blame it on a relative weakness of conference. If those upsets are regular there are a couple reasons.
1. You're probably not consistently ready to play against perceived weaker competition in the tournament
2. The stuff you run is so basic that those teams can take you out of your primary stuff pretty easily

I think this is on Self more than anything else. Best regular season coach in the country... But might be the most overrated coach in perceived quality when it comes to March.

This happened to him at Illinois too. Never a horrendous loss, but 2 of 3 losses came against lesser seeds.

Hard to improve if you are not being pushed.

Competition just isn't there year in and year out.

This year though I think they just had a terrible shooting night. I believe Kansas is top 3 this year with UVA and UNC. Would not have put us there before the ACC tournament but certainly thought that after it.

That's exactly right. We THINK they're good because of who they're playing but it's a soft schedule against teams with far less talent and it's proved in the NCAAT.

If you discount the two times KU was a 1 seed and lost to a 2 (not really an "upset" IMO), Self still has 7 losses in 13 seasons to teams where Kansas was the significantly higher seeded team (avg: 7.7 higher seed). That's a bad track record.
