Unless I missed it, how is there not a thread on this? Smoke coming from Tuscaloosa that they are pursuing Drake hard, with a huge NIL deal on the table. Of course he’s not in the portal and this would be tampering, but as we saw with Jordan Addison, blue bloods can do whatever the f they want in this new world of college football, and no one cares/no chance of repercussion.

Tampering is a certainty even for average players with P5 experience.

Could Maybe the the leading Heisman candidate as Bama QB? Absolutely. Could he be the final piece for Saban to win another National Championship? Yes.

Are the odds good, poor, or nearly impossible that Mack could get UNC into the 2023 Playoffs?

Gonna be funny to see if there are many official moves Monday, meaning contact has been happening outside the window.

SEC teams are the leaders in figuring out new ways to cheat, so no surprise if Bama has been working on something bordering on tampering.

It looks Iike this NIL crap will provide the bama's and osu's of the world a way to *ahem* "legally" pay their players.

None of this is new. USC last year blatantly did it and nothing happened to them. This crap is turning into a complete free agency, with seemingly no guardrails in place. At least professional sports have rules on free agency, and aside from baseball, there’s a salary cap to provide some level of parity/fairness. College football is just a hot mess.

The most valuable name and likeness in the history of athletics is directly tied to the UNC athletic department.

Someone needs to come up with a creative plan for integrating the Jordan brand into a NIL package for UNC football.

a major protection the pros have to prevent the deepest pockets from buying championships is the DRAFT! i wonder what a draft would look like for college football?

Obviously that wouldn’t work but it’s fun to think about. Could you imagine if Georgia had to pick 117 and Alabama 116 or something like that, while little sisters of the poor gets to pick #1 overall? For one thing, we would get to see how big of an impact coaching and scheme really have.

There's no thread because Alabama is just the latest team where there has been "smoke." You can believe it if you want, and it might actually be true, but there are about five different smokes happening around Drake right now. Odds are most people don't know shit.

I think it's going to be good for parity in the long run. Those schools aren't going to be the only ones that can play now. And despite all these reports you hear, 99.9% of these NIL deals are nothing like this. They're more like Bacot's deal with the seafood restaurant or players having summer camps. People are buying into the headlines and the media is loving those clicks.

There are thousands of athletes in the NCAA. Probably more than that in deals. You're talking about maybe 5-10 deals. It's just another example of the cultural wars the media is trying to invent to make money. It's the same type of discussion that we talk about on OOTB. The media promotes the extremes and people fall for it.

I meant bluster, btw.

Jordan Addison’s total NIL was reported to be in the $4m neighborhood. His deal with United Airlines alone was over $1M. If Drake isn’t getting wooed by deals that are at or above that level, consider me shocked.

Also, we aren’t talking about the other 1000s of low profile athletes. We are talking about the ACC POY, among other accolades, who happens to be on our team. If it isn’t worth discussing that kind of topic on a board like this, then I don’t know what the point of the board is.

Exactly. Addison was the Bilitnikof winner, but that is less than what Maye is.

The discussion broadened as the thread went along. YOU might not be talking about it, but OTHER people are. You can still talk about Drake, though. You aren't limited. But just to refresh my memory, which smoke are you talking about? Drake to Tennessee? Georgia? Alabama? OSU? I can't remember what the latest rumor is.

Where is Jay Bilas to lecture all of us on the need for paying players??? What a putz!!!

Nothing has happened so far to say he was wrong. I will say the NCAA screwed up (I know that's shocking) by just letting everyone do what they want. There needs to be some guardrails in place, but you don't punish the majority, because of the minority.

They deserve some compensation without the fear/threat of being expelled or suspended or other penalties. They've been getting paid (illegally) for... ever. But, the same sources that were paying them illegally are always looking for ways to game the system and get leverage and therefore spoil the NIL intent.

Exactly. I had no idea that this thing was basically just the Wild West.

I have no issue with NIL and players getting paid. I think all NIL should have to be public record and there should be some guidelines around it. I also wouldn’t mind seeing the rule about having to sit a year if you transfer, except for the hardship transfers they always allowed for in the past. Maybe another exception if there is a coaching change.

What I don’t want to see is someone like an Akron - or , let’s face it, a Carolina or Pitt or whoever - recruit a player, develop them, and then when they exceed expectations, the “big boys” step in and take whoever they want in a free for all.

Jacolby Criswell is officially transferring..that should tell us all we need to know on the thread
Doesn't tell us anything other than he is transferring. You're assuming he would still want to be here if Drake wasn't. All the reasons drake would transfer apply to Criswell too.

Criswell was the most likely of anyone else on the team to be leaving.

he stays. carolina needs him, bama doesn't. their backup QB ty simpson was a higher rated recruit (3rd vs 9th for drake) and he has won raves in practice.

You don't turn down a chance at a Heisman candidate because you have a guy that does well in practice. Saban isn't that stupid.
